Matthew Fitzpatrick
After a subpar start to his season, Fitzpatrick is playing sensational golf heading into the FedEx Cup Playoffs. In his last four starts, the Englishman has finished T8th, T4th, T4th and T8th, in that order. Fitzpatrick impressively gained strokes in every major category at all four of these events, and he has shot under par in 17 of his last 18 rounds. Additionally, when we compare this star-studded field’s last 24 rounds, Fitzpatrick ranks third in total strokes gained.
There truly isn’t a flaw in the 30-year-old’s game right now. Fitzpatrick needs to keep his foot on the gas this week at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, as he currently sits 41st in the FedEx Cup standings. Following this playoff opening event, only the top-50 players in the standings will advance to next week’s BMW Championship and then, only the top-30 players after that tournament will advance to the TOUR Championship at East Lake in two weeks.
Fitzpatrick will be extremely focused at TPC Southwind this week. The two-time PGA TOUR winner has been excellent at this par 70 in the past. Fitzpatrick has competed at TPC Southwind six times, and three of these finishes come inside the top-six. Fitzpatrick has shot a 6-under 64 at TPC Southwind twice, and this venue presenting Bermuda greens is terrific news for the veteran. He is statistically at his best as a putter on this type of putting surface, and his last win on the PGA TOUR came at Harbour Town Golf Links, which is a course that features Bermuda greens. Furthermore, Fitzpatrick caught fire with his flat stick when competing on Bermuda putting surfaces at Sedgefield CC last week, with him finishing sixth in SGP for the event.
