Jason Day
Jason Day is quietly having a very impressive season. The former World No. 1 finished T-8 at the Masters last week, which is his best finish at Augusta National in six years and Day’s fourth top-15 finish in just eight starts this season. Besides with his driver, Day gained strokes in every major category at the Masters, including 6.2 ARG, which ranked second for the major. This isn’t the first time this season that the Australian has contended in a world-class field either, as Day finished T-13 at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am in February and T-8 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March, both of which are Signature Events that feature the PGA TOUR’s best players competing for a $20 million purse.
The RBC Heritage is another Signature Event and this tournament will be played at the Pete Dye-designed Harbour Town Golf Links. Day finished T-18 at this venue last season – including a closing-round 5-under 66 – which marked his fourth top-25 finish in six starts at Harbour Town. In general, Day has a long history of thriving at Dye-designed courses. Three of his 13 PGA TOUR wins have notably come at tracks created by Dye, including his three-shot win at the PGA Championship in 2015 and his four-shot win at THE PLAYERS Championship in 2016. When we compare this field’s histories at Dye designs, Day ranks fourth in strokes gained per round.
Also, Day has been an elite par five player this season, ranking 21st in par five performance, which bodes very well for his return to Harbour Town this week. Capitalizing on the three par fives at this par 71 is essential for success at Harbour Town, as four of the last five winners at this track have finished the event top-five in par five efficiency. Additionally, Harbour Town presents POA Trivialis greens and when we compare this field’s last 50 rounds at courses with POA putting surfaces, Day ranks seventh in strokes gained per round. The 37-year-old has a strong chance to finish inside the top-10 this weekend and Day likely won’t be a common pick in your OAD pool.
