J.J. Spaun
While I no longer can win my OAD pool, I do have a chance to finish inside the top-five if I pick the winner of the BMW Championship, bringing me to J.J. Spaun, who is my best option remaining. Spaun has established himself as one of the best players in the world this season and he nearly picked up his second win of 2025 at last week’s FedEx St. Jude Championship, losing to Justin Rose in a three-hole playoff. Spaun carded back-to-back 5-under 65s at TPC Southwind to close out this tournament, making him the top weekend scorer at this playoff event. Spaun also led the field in SGT2G, which is very impressive, given this was a world-class field that consisted of 69 of the top-70 players in the FedEx Cup standings.
Speaking of the FedEx Cup standings, Spaun sits third on that list heading into the BMW Championship, trailing only the top-two players in the world in Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy. This season, Spaun has made 17-of-21 with six top-10 finishes and he has vaulted himself up the world golf rankings from No. 115 to a career-best No. 6. Most notably, Spaun became a major champion at the U.S. Open at Oakmont CC in June, which is notable for this week, as Oakmont saw renovations under Tom Fazio, who designed this week’s Caves Valley Golf Club. Plus, Spaun finished runner-up at both THE PLAYERS Championship in April and the Cognizant Classic in March, with that latter tournament being played at the Fazio-designed PGA National. Overall, Spaun is gaining an outstanding 2.24 strokes per round at Fazio courses this season, which ranks second only to Scheffler.
Spaun didn’t compete at Caves Valley when this venue hosted the 2021 BMW Championship, but his game sets up nicely for the track, which will now play as a long par 70 at 7,601 yards, instead of a par 72 like four years ago. With Caves Valley being a lengthy course that features narrow fairways and thick rough, being an efficient driver will be a must this week and Spaun checks that box, ranking 29th in total driving this season. Furthermore, the 34-year-old ranks sixth in SG APP, which is a great sign for a venue that presents small putting surfaces like Caves Valley. Lastly, with this track now a traditional par 70 that is home to 12 par fours, being an elite par four player will be essential this week and Spaun ranks 17th in par four performance this season.
Spaun has shown an ability to elevate his game in the strongest fields this season and him winning at Caves Valley this weekend is in the realm of possibility. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Spaun carries the eighth-best odds to win the BMW Championship at +3000.
