Big Brother Week 5 Power Rankings: Kamu's Stunning Turnaround

A player I thought was left for dead in the Big Brother house somehow turned disaster into the best position they’ve been in all season, reshaping my Week 5 power rankings in the process. Their former ally Chuk wasn’t nearly as fortunate, becoming the fifth houseguest evicted from Big Brother Season 28 (read my Thursday recap here).

Notable Risers

Another week, another breeze for the Survivor Icons. Dee and Devens remain in the top two spots in the power rankings, well ahead of the field. Dee was on the cusp of leading another vote flip, which became moot when Haley won the BB Blockbuster. But it shows that basically Dee can do whatever she wants in the house, even if it’s out of boredom. Devens is basically at that same level, as evidenced by his out loud thinking in working to save Haley with Dee. If everyone else in the house doesn’t wake up soon, it will be too late and the Survivor Icons will be on their way to the jury phase of Big Brother Season 28.

All that said, here are some other houseguests moving up the ranks.

Kamu (+8)

Last week, I ranked all three core members of the Red Corner at the bottom of my power rankings. In the aftermath of the Drew-Melody blindside, it looked like all three were cooked. Well I was right about two of the three, but somehow Kamu came out the other side and finds himself in an even BETTER position!

Kamu, no matter how you might feel about him (in case you can’t tell, I’m not really a fan), provided a masterclass on how to move in the house this week. He went from being a likely nominee and even potential target to being the lynchpin in the house and someone basically everyone wants to work with. He not only got himself off the block, but he successfully got one of his former allies he wanted out of the house put up in his place.

In addition to proving his social bonafides, Kamu reminded us that he is one of the season’s top comp threats, winning the Veto comp to consolidate even more power. Now, Kamu chose NOT to use the Power of Veto to save either of his two former close allies, Haley and Chuk, and that could have consequences. Haley could feel some sort of way about being abandoned by Kamu, but at the same time it may actually engender more goodwill for the MMA fighter in the house.

After looking left for dead after last week, Kamu suddenly looks primed for a long run, potentially even to the very end of the game.

Taylor (+1)

Taylor said the quiet part out loud early in the week — this was really her HOH.

Yes, LaLa won the Wall comp. giving us that feel-good iconic moment that production will use for years to come. But when it comes to game, Taylor largely drives the bus with LaLa as a passenger. And this week was no different. Taylor talked LaLa out of nominating Devens noting (correctly) that he may have a power. And it became clear to everyone, that Taylor had LaLa’s ear. Now that could be a double-edged sword if people decide to punish Taylor for LaLa’s choices that may have really been Taylor’s choices, but there is a chance that Taylor will get all the benefits and none of the blood on her hands of being HOH.

To that end, Taylor used LaLa’s time in power to build up her position in the game with new alliances. She reintroduced her Tethers idea that had been previously put on the back burner with Kamu and Devens, and also seemed ready to lock something in with Kamu, Yash and LaLa.

There’s really no doubt that Taylor got more out of LaLa’s HOH reign than LaLa did herself and it’s not even particularly close. Taylor is emerging as a real player in this game (which Dee has also noticed) and is someone to watch moving forward.

Notable Fallers

Haley survived this week, but let’s be clear — she’s still got no path to victory. She would have stayed in the house even if she hadn’t won the Blockbuster, but that’s because she’s made so many enemies that people saw value in keeping her around as someone for the house to hate. And the idea that she thinks she’s going into the BB Time Capsule this week? Laughable.

So, clearly she’s still at the bottom of my rankings. But here’s who else I think had a down week in the Big Brother house.

Mallory (-3)/Barrett (-3)

I’m putting Mallory and Barrett together here as this is more of a down rank for the entirety of the For the American People alliance.

I still like Mallory in general, but the problem is she and her whole alliance basically took the week off. Yes, they’ve been fighting for their lives in this game every week this season, but they really got a little too comfortable this week. Now, part of the issue for Mallory was that the nature of her tethered Adam & Eve (or in her case, Eve & Eve) punishment sidelined her for the early part of the week. But she compounded it by choosing her ally Melody for the punishment. I understand the idea that if you’re going to have this punishment it makes sense to do it with someone you get along with, but she could have used the punishment to her advantage by tethering herself to someone like Dee. Mallory is still the member of this alliance with the highest ceiling, but it was something of an off week for her.

Barrett also drops, mostly as a result of hitting the block. That makes it easier for him to get nominated again in the future. I’m also docking Barrett points for returning to his rat ways and running to the Icons with information from a meeting where LaLa outlined how she wanted to target at least two of them. There are instances where doing this makes sense, but Barrett has said over and over again how he’s tired of being at the bottom of the Toolshed/Crossovers alliance and wants to blow it up. So if that’s the case, why are you running back to the top of that alliance with info to help their standing in their game?

If you’re done with that alliance, this is your chance to latch on elsewhere! Maybe not LaLa in particular (see below), but there is potential in teaming up with Taylor, Yash, Melody, Mallory and Drew to put some heat on the Icons. Instead he’s positioning himself once again to accept the Icons’ scraps and be at the bottom of their alliance while also potentially damaging his better alliance with Mallory.

Barrett is just never going to learn in this game.

LaTrice (-1)

How do you actually drop in the rankings at the end of the week where you were HOH and didn’t have a Haley-like reign of terror? Well, LaLa is going to get all the heat from her actions as HOH with absolutely none of the credit.

First of all, all credit to LaLa for winning the Wall comp. That was an iconic moment that will live on in Big Brother lore and highlight packages for years to come. So, if she does nothing else this season she’s got that. But the reality is, things kind of went downhill for her from there.

Let’s be real — this was Taylor’s HOH. She was the puppetmaster, pulling LaLa’s strings. She was the one taking this week where LaLa was in power to make game moves that set her up for a better future in the game. Taylor, as seen above, came out better as a result of LaLa’s HOH than LaLa herself did. And, there may be people (looking at you Haley) who will be looking for revenge on LaLa as a result of her choices this week.

I didn’t like how Chuk continued to drag LaLa in his exit interview with Julie on Thursday night (get some self-awareness, bro) or how he tried to mansplain the game to her earlier in the week from his position on the block. And I do think LaLa is right when she says part of her plan is #confused. But, I also don’t think she’s doing as well as she thinks she is. Ultimately, I think she has one of the lowest ceilings of those left in the house.
