Big Brother Season 28 Power Rankings: Devens takes No. 1 thanks to Dee’s Messy Week 7 HOH

All season long, Dee has been at or near the top of my power rankings. But she has consistently been a bit sloppy in her gameplay, and has made choices based more on boredom than strategic thinking.

Well, this is the week where I think these less-than-ideal tendencies have come back to bite her, leading me to drop her out of the top spot. Don’t get it twisted — she’s still one of the top players in the game and still has a great chance to become the first person to win both Survivor and Big Brother.

But her flaws are becoming more apparent and I can’t ignore them. And one of her allies and an adversary slipped ahead of her with their gameplay this week.

For the first time in weeks, we’ve got a new No. 1. Seven of the 10 remaining houseguests moved this week, with LaTrice (+5) and Barrett (+3) making the biggest jumps and Dee (-2) and Drew (-2) suffering the biggest drops.

1. Devens (+1)/2. Yash (+1)/3. Dee (-2)

I want to make this as clear as possible — I did not like the way Dee handled her HOH this week. I will give credit where credit is due: She made the most of her BB Bribe power. And she did get out her intended target, Mallory. But in a week that could have been pretty easy, she made things more complicated than necessary, which has been a growing trend with Dee this season. Instead of just putting up Haley, Dee put up two members of an alliance she was supposed to be in, sending one of them home. In doing so, she lost Barrett and Melody, potentially handing Yash two numbers from her side of the house while killing the Mosh Pit in the process. And we’ll have to see what happens with Drew, who was clearly not happy to evict Mallory but followed orders. Plus, I have to dock her points for falling for Yash’s lies about Drew, taking the word of an adversary over an ally.

Devens, on the other hand, pitched the plan to target Mallory, made it a reality, and mostly avoided getting blood on his hands, as Mallory and Melody blamed Dee for the move. And before Barrett woke up, Devens did masterful manipulative work on Drew and Barrett that showed just how much Devens is better at this game than his two boys.The last two weeks have shown that Devens can think several moves ahead despite his reputation for being chaotic. He has demonstrated an ability to lock in, game out different scenarios and put in the necessary work. Plus, Dee’s BB Bribe deal with Yash also protects Devens, so things are looking pretty good for the two-time Survivor player.

And I have to give props to Yash. I may not have liked how he played this week, being a bit grimy and lying through his teeth, but it was effective. He got Drew on the block and got to sit back and enjoy watching Drew squirm. A side effect of Drew being on the block was that it made it so he couldn’t go against the Icons like Barrett, potentially costing Drew an ongoing relationship with Barrett and Melody and sending them into Yash’s open arms. That is a big blow to Drew and a big gain for Yash. Yash is a bit hamstrung as a result of accepting the BB Bribe, but we saw he was still able to wheel and deal a bit this week in spite of it. So it wouldn’t surprise me to see Yash point other players in the direction of the Icons even if he himself can’t take the shot in his next HOH. And the deal has also made the Icons more likely to protect Yash, so that’s even more good news. Yash has really shown steady improvement over the course of the season.

6. LaTrice (+5)

LaLa has been disrespected for most of the season. Even her own ally Taylor has, at times, been somewhat cruel to the 58-year-old, going so far as to tell LaLa to basically sit in the corner and be quiet a few weeks ago. But I think this week was a major step forward for LaLa.

LaLa won her second comp of the season, taking herself off the block with the Power of Veto to further burnish her resume. Now players will have to start giving her some respect when it comes to comps, a far cry from her reputation after a disastrous performance in the pickleball veto comp earlier in the season.

Plus, I think her social game is improving. Taylor may still complain and feel like she’s playing for two, but as I noted in my Live Feeds spoilers earlier this week, LaLa was actually making good moves. LaLa and Devens reached a détente (however real you think that was) and she also had good conversations with Dee. At the very least, taking herself off the block gave LaLa some room to maneuver and I liked what I saw from her this week.

LaLa has talked multiple times this season about proving to women of a certain age that they can do anything. I still don’t see the path to victory that LaLa apparently sees for herself, but the idea of her winning no longer feels quite as ludicrous as it did a few weeks ago.

7. Barrett (+3)/10. Drew (-2)

Barrett and Drew have been tied at the hip all season, so it made sense for me to examine their diverging paths in the game here. Really, I think they’re two sides of the same coin.

All season long, both have been acolytes of the Icons, doing their dirty work and providing intel, even when it didn’t help their game. They were proud middle men, hoping to have their cake and eat it too by enjoying the protection of being in the house’s dominant power structure while also being able to hang out with people they would probably rather be aligned with in Mallory and Melody. The bill came due this week, however, and I think Barrett made the right choice in turning on the Icons and Drew put himself on a path that is only going lead to disappointment.

Here’s the thing, both knew they were at the bottom of the Crossovers and have expressed displeasure with that alliance. Both talked about wanting to blow it up at various points. But when given the chance, both had tucked their tails between their legs and were obedient little lap dogs for the vets. However, nominating Mallory was a bridge too far for Barrett. He has finally woken up and seen that no matter what, his game and his wants were always going to be something the Icons didn’t care about in the least. All he had to do is look at how the Icons treated Drew to see that there is no benefit to remaining loyal to the Icons, so he finally decided to stop talking about blowing up the Crossovers and took steps to make it a reality. Now, was it a case of too little too late, with Mallory paying the price? Absolutely. But I think he saw the light just soon enough that he could still find a lifeboat and move to Yash’s side of the house with Melody before it was too late.

On the flip side of the coin, Drew must be a glutton for punishment. He was put on the block by an ally—again—willfully ignored the warning signs that they would have been comfortable sending him home—again—and was forced to evict someone he wanted to keep. And it really didn’t have to be this way. This is not the type of week you should have with an ally in power. As a result of the Icons’ manipulation and his own choices, Drew is left on an island. Now that he’s helped strike a blow to FAP and likely lost Melody, he really has no choice but to remain loyal to the Icons. He’s gone all in on the Crossovers. But the reality is, he’s entirely expendable to them. They’ve been quietly gunning for him for weeks now and they could toss him aside at any moment. Thursday night’s eviction vote was a sliding doors moment for Drew. Would voting out Taylor have been scary and theoretically less safe? Sure. The Icons would have used it to confirm all their doubts about Drew’s loyalty. But even in a losing effort, breaking with them would have been better for his long-term game. It could have freed him from their influence and given him a chance to rebuild his relationships with Barrett and Melody. The fever might finally have broken. As it stands, he’ll never be anything but the bottom of the Crossovers alliance (as evidenced by the fact Dee was more concerned about protecting Haley than Drew) and that’s why he’s at the bottom of my rankings.
