The August box office has been buoyed by The Odyssey and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, with original flicks like One Night Only, The End of Oak Street and Mutiny meeting mostly mixed results. Ridley Scott’s adaptation of The Dog Stars hit theaters on August 28, adding another contender to the list of hopeful breakouts. So how much business did the dystopian action movie reel in over its first three days on the big screen?
Here is a breakdown of how The Dog Stars performed at the box office this past weekend:
The Dog Stars Box Office
The Dog Stars made $7.7 million at the box office between August 28 and August 30. Ridley Scott’s last movie, 2024’s Gladiator II, opened to $55.0 million, while his Napoleon made $20.6 million when it opened in November 2023. In 2021, he had House of Gucci open to $14.4 million and The Last Duel open to $4.8 million. Scott previously directed All the Money in the World and Alien: Covenant to $5.6 million and $36.2 million starts in 2017, respectively, plus The Martian‘s $54.3 million opening in 2015 and Exodus: Gods and Kings‘ $24.1 million launch in 2014. As for star Jacob Elordi, this is good for the second-highest opening of his career behind Wuthering Heights‘ $32.8 million, although his defining roles in Frankenstein and The Kissing Booth movies notably debuted on Netflix.
According to Deadline, The Dog Stars made $850K in domestic Thursday night previews. That cash is technically counted as part of the film’s $3.0 million Friday gross. It proceeded to make $2.8 million on Saturday and $1.9 million on Sunday. The Dog Stars posted the seventh-largest domestic opening weekend by an R-rated non-horror movie so far this year. The Odyssey leads that group with $123.5 million, followed by Scary Movie, Mortal Kombat II, Wuthering Heights, The Drama and Crime 101.
Looking beyond the United States and Canada, The Dog Stars has reeled in an additional $11.3 overseas. In total, the film grossed $19.0 million worldwide over its opening weekend. The Dog Stars reportedly won’t get a release in China, limiting its global box office potential. It won’t take long for The Dog Stars to surpass The Last Duel‘s $30.6 million total gross, though, with All the Money in the World‘s $56.9 million also within reach. However, House of Gucci‘s $147.5 million mark might be setting the bar a little too high. It’s safe to say that The Dog Stars won’t be sniffing Napoleon’s $217.9 million, Alien: Covenant‘s $238.5 million, Exodus: Gods and Kings‘ $268.3 million, Gladiator II‘s $460.4 million or The Martian‘s $653.6 million, either, just looking at Scott’s output from the past 12 years.
