This year’s summer box office has had its fair share of original breakout hits, namely Backrooms and Obsession. A handful of branded blockbusters have fallen short of expectations, though, from Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu and Masters of the Universe to Supergirl. The Odyssey, which hit theaters nationwide on July 17, could change the tides. So how much business did Christopher Nolan’s much-anticipated historical epic reel in out of the gates?
Here is a breakdown of how The Odyssey performed at the box office this past weekend:
The Odyssey Box Office
The Odyssey made $123.5 million at the box office between July 17 and July 19. For comparison, Oppenheimer opened to $82.5 million over the same weekend in July 2023 alongside Barbie. Christopher Nolan has had a pretty strong hold on the mid-July corridor for a while now, with Dunkirk opening to $50.5 million in 2017, The Dark Knight Rises opening to $160.9 million in 2012, Inception opening to $62.8 million in 2010 and The Dark Knight opening to $158.4 million in 2008.
According to Deadline and Variety, The Odyssey made $17.6 million in Thursday night previews. That cash is technically counted as part of the film’s $51 million Friday gross. The Odyssey scored the third-highest domestic opening weekend so far in 2026, trailing only Toy Story 5 and The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Looking beyond the United States and Canada, The Odyssey has reeled in an additional $139.5 million overseas. In total, the film grossed $263.0 million worldwide over its opening weekend. Oppenheimer finished with $975.8 million at the global box office. Nolan’s prior film, Tenet, legged out to $376.6 million despite coming out in the thick of the COVID-19 pandemic in August 2020. The Dark Knight and The Dark Knight Rises both cleared $1 billion globally, topping Nolan’s filmography. The Oscar-winner had Inception make it to $839.8 million, Interstellar reach $764.3 million, Dunkirk hit $549.9 million and Batman Begins finish at $375.6 million. Insomnia made $113.8 million and The Prestige $109.7 million, while Memento scored $43.3 million on a $5 budget all the way back in 2001.
