What happened last time on Big Brother Season 28?

Wednesday’s episode delivered on all the drama Sunday’s cliffhanger promised. The nomination ceremony fallout played out in full — Angela went off on Jason for his betrayal, Haley exposed Jason’s plan to target the women, and Rome’s Cool Hand Luke persona cracked for the first time when he came at Haley in the heat of the moment.

Devens then won the Power of Veto in a psychedelic puzzle competition, giving him total control of the week with both HOH and veto in hand. After weighing whether to save Melody or Lyric, he chose to remove Lyric — buying into her pitch that she’d be a number for him going forward and reasoning it could serve as a gesture to Rome should he somehow survive.

Rome was named the replacement nominee, completing the backdoor. The final block heading into tonight: Rome, Jason and Melody.

What to expect on Big Brother tonight

The BB Blockbuster

Rome, Jason and Melody each get one final shot to save themselves in the BB Blockbuster competition before the live vote. This is Rome’s last lifeline. The Toolshed has the numbers to send him home, his alliances have been exposed and blown apart, and Devens has made it clear that this entire week was designed to get Rome out of the house.

Rome promised Lyric he’d win it. He told the cameras you’re going to see the real Rome come out on Thursday. Whether that bravado translates into an actual competition win is the only thing standing between him and Julie Chen Moonves.

If Rome wins the BB Blockbuster, the Toolshed’s backup target is Jason. And if Jason saves himself? Then the vote gets messy, because Melody — who Devens and parts of the alliance have been debating about all week — becomes the default option against whoever remains.

Where the votes stand

The Toolshed controls eight votes: Dee, Angela, Barrett, Drew, Kamu, Haley, Chuk and (from the sidelines as HOH) Devens directing traffic. That’s more than enough to send home whoever they want. Rome’s side of the house — Lyric, LaTrice, and whatever remains of his fractured connections — simply doesn’t have the numbers to save him.

Rome’s campaign this week has been emotional rather than strategic. He impressed Devens by handling the aftermath of the nomination ceremony with respect, walking up to the HOH room to talk things out rather than spiraling. Devens even said he likes Rome more now than before. But liking someone and keeping them in the game are two very different things, and Devens has been clear: Rome’s ability to recover and rally people is exactly why he needs to go.

The fake breakup

Rome and Lyric staged a breakup earlier this week to try and lower Lyric’s threat level and separate their games in the eyes of the house. They told anyone who’d listen they were done. Lyric got flirty with Chuk and Yash. The plan worked well enough to help get Lyric off the block — but Drew clocked it as fake almost immediately, and Devens admitted he probably doesn’t believe it either.

Now that Lyric is safe, the breakup appears to be over in everything but name. If Rome survives tonight, this fake split is going to look transparent to the entire house. If he goes home, Lyric is free to move forward unattached — and she’s already positioned herself as a potential number for Devens going forward. Either way, the showmance’s future gets decided tonight.

Jason’s uncertain position

Jason isn’t the primary target, but he’s far from safe. His Week 1 plotting against the icons blew up spectacularly during the nomination ceremony. Angela exposed him in front of the house. He admitted to the betrayal and apologized. Angela forgave him — but made clear she won’t forget.

If Rome wins the BB Blockbuster, Jason becomes the next man up. And even if Rome goes home as planned, Jason enters Week 3 with a decimated reputation, no real alliance structure and the knowledge that multiple people in the house have seen exactly who he is. The Court Jesters alliance with Drew and Melody is functionally dead. Mama’s Angels loses its founder in Rome. Jason is alone.

Melody’s path forward

Melody has spent the week in tears, feeling like she’s played a bad game and made every wrong decision. She doesn’t trust Jason or Rome anymore, but she still trusts Drew — who actively pitched Devens to save her this week. Drew is the one person she feels she has in this game, and he went to bat for her.

Here’s the problem: even as Drew was making his case and Devens was floating the idea of bringing Melody in, Melody told the diary room she doesn’t actually want to play with Devens — mocking him for nominating “two little girls” and making clear she has no interest in working with him. Devens doesn’t know exactly what she said to the cameras, but ultimately he chose Lyric over Melody anyway, saying plainly that he trusts Lyric more. Whether he sensed Melody’s resistance or simply preferred Lyric’s pitch, the end result is the same — Melody stayed on the block and the bridge to the Toolshed was never built.

Melody appears to be the safest of the three nominees heading into tonight. The Toolshed wants Rome out, and multiple houseguests think Melody has the votes to stay against whoever she’s sitting next to. But surviving by default only gets you so far. She has Drew in her corner, yet the most powerful alliance in the house just showed her exactly where she stands with them. And there have been some murmurs from certain corners of the house angling to actually send Melody home. Add it all up and it spells trouble.

Who won HOH this week?

DEVENS won HOH on Sunday, making it two weeks in a row that a member of the Crossovers/Toolshed alliance took control of the house.
