Big Brother Season 28 Power Rankings After Week 1: Who's Rising and Falling?

Entering the second week of Big Brother Season 28, we’ve got a much clearer picture of where everyone stands, and unsurprisingly the power rankings have changed quite a bit.

The Crossover alliance featuring Dee, Devens, Angela, Barrett and Drew dominated Week 1, and despite a few missteps, that group appears to be in the best position in the house to run the game. Meanwhile, Jason and LaTrice have some things to work on after a disappointing stretch which threw their future prospects into doubt.

So, following the first live eviction and a week of live-feed developments, here’s how all 16 remaining houseguests stack up in my weekly power rankings entering Week 2!

Biggest Risers

Dee (NR)

This might be a little unfair since she was unranked last week and then became the head of household, but Dee had a pretty successful week to start her Big Brother journey.

The Survivor 45 winner was running the game from the HOH room, forming two major alliances in The Crossovers and The Red Corner and is well set up moving forward since she didn’t get a ton of blowback for her nominations. She also also demonstrated the strategic instincts and alliance-building ability that helped her win Survivor, but tweaked for Big Brother. Combine that with her established physical prowess from her seasons on Survivor, and it’s easy to see a path where Dee isn’t just around all summer—she’s sitting in one of the Final 2 chairs on finale night.

Yes, she has work to do to repair relations with Yash and Taylor, but they’re two of the more isolated houseguests remaining. She also appears to not be the biggest target of noted icon-hater Jason (who we’ll get to in a minute), either.

One concern is the budding situation between Barrett and Dee, with their cuddling and closeness drawing attention on the live feeds. But overall, this first week could not have gone much better for Dee.

Drew (+12)

I admit, I may have gotten Drew completely wrong. In my power rankings last week, I had Drew near the bottom, fearing he would annoy the heck out of everyone in the house with his youthful enthusiasm. But he was actually one of the more consequential players in the first week of the season.

Drew was WORKING the house in Week 1, making alliances left and right (perhaps too many, to be honest). He also became a KEY member of The Crossovers, proving his worth by being a fountain of information and reliably bringing it back to the alliance. He has a major connection with Devens, which could be very beneficial, but is also well set up with side alliances should anything go wrong with his main Crossovers alliance.

That said, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows for Drew. Angela is already getting paranoid about him and may be getting close to calling him droopy eyes (as opposed to the famed crazy eyes from BB26) soon. He’s also spreading himself pretty thin, and if he’s not careful he’s going to expose himself as being in so many alliances. We saw in BB27 that Vince found himself somewhat hamstrung at a certain point in the game because he seemingly made alliances with EVERYONE. Now, he did finish the season as the runner up, and it appears Drew is starting off a bit stronger socially than Vince did last year. But it’s something to watch with Drew despite a stellar first week where he was a major player in the house.

Barrett (+9)

Another player who I wasn’t initially impressed with, but who has proven to be a better player than expected.

Barrett started weak, being one of two players with the now-eliminated Ashley to not get the chance to compete for safety or in the first HOH competition. But, like Drew, Barrett moved with impact through the house in the first week, with numerous players looking to play with him. And like Drew, he was drafted into the season’s biggest alliance to date in the Crossovers, which ran Week 1 and looks primed for a solid run.

Barrett also made a strong connection with Dee, and at the very least we’re seeing plenty of cuddling on the live feeds, if we’re not quite at full showmance yet like with Lyric and Rome (which is smart, because I have serious concerns that Lyric and Rome are losing sight of the game). People have taken note of Dee and Barrett’s closeness, so they may have to downplay that a bit, but I like what I’m seeing from the jumbotron technician.

Biggest Fallers

Jason (-10)

I had HIGH hopes for Jason. He was not treated as much of a reality vet as Dee or Devens, but Jason had multiple appearances on RuPaul’s Drag Race, so it was fair to grade Jason on a higher curve than the other “newbies.” And unfortunately, I believe we have to give him a failing grade for Week 1.

Not only did Jason make the questionable decision that he was going to go after the icons, specifically Devens and Angela. But he compounded the mistake by talking LOUDLY about how much he was targeting the icons. Jason was NOT subtle about his desire to get Devens out of the house, nor about how proud he was that he was playing with Angela’s emotions and heartstrings. If there’s anyone in the house I wouldn’t want to toy with, it’s Angela, who knows about Jason’s treachery thanks to Drew. Even worse for Jason, he’s been so loose lipped about his enmity for the icons that he won’t be able to tell who tipped off Devens and Angela. It’s all bad.

And his reasoning that he is worried they’re going to be America’s favorite houseguest is a bit of a case of putting the cart before the horse. Worry about the playing the game now before worrying about how America will vote in two months, Jason. I have serious concerns about Jason moving forward and it really didn’t have to go this way.

LaTrice (-10)

LaTrice had tons of energy and a great preseason interview heading into the season that raised expectations, perhaps a bit too much. Once the game began, however, LaTrice really didn’t have the impact I thought she would.

Yes, she formed the Mama’s Angels alliance with Rome and Jason, but her social game was not nearly as impactful as I expected it to be. I thought everyone in the house would LOVE LaLa. As it turns out, her fountain of energy actually proved to be off-putting for some in a way I had expected more for Drew. Really, LaLa’s biggest connection has been with Taylor, who had to survive a trip to the block this week. And for some bizarre reason she’s also targeting Angela, not because she’s a returning player, but more for the title of house mom. Like with Jason, I don’t like this plan.

There’s still plenty of time for LaLa to turn things around, but she needs to rally in Week 2.

Chuk (-10)/Haley (-5)

This is really a downvote for the Red Corner alliance. Haley is really dragging Chuk down by association. Kamu escapes being listed here because he has been able to break away some and show some influence with Dee. Chuk and Haley have largely been on an island with each other, however, and that’s not a great thing.

If you’ve been watching the live feed, then you know Haley is not well liked in the house. She was probably in the worst position of anyone who wasn’t on the block this week and I’m not sure if she has the social skills to repair her game. If she’s going to survive, she’s going to have to become a comp beast, which is possible. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if she is going to be an easy target for the house until she is sent packing.

Chuk didn’t really do much wrong this week, but he also didn’t do much right. He really is all in on the Red Corner. Which could be a problem given the fact that the main trio in that alliance was largely played by Dee, Devens and the Crossovers. Plus, being so tied to Haley could become a problem moving forward. It’s easy to see scenarios where Kamu, Chuk and Haley are all up on the block. And Chuk is neither as popular as Kamu with the rest of the house nor as much of a potential comp beast as Haley, who played D1 softball, or Kamu, who was in the UFC. So I would advise Chuk to start working the house a little bit harder and detach himself from the Red Corner a bit.
