Scottie Scheffler
It’s always difficult deciding when to use Scheffler, given he has so much win equity whenever he tees it up, but the world No. 1 is in a great position to win the $3.42 million top prize this week and this is the right time to deploy him in your one and done pools. Scheffler elected to skip last week’s Truist Championship to be better prepared for his title defense at the PGA Championship this week. Scheffler won last year’s PGA Championship at Quail Hollow Club by a convincing five shots and in his five starts at this major, Scheffler finished T-4, T-8, MC, T-2, T-8 and first.
Since the start of last season, Scheffler has won seven times in 30 starts, three of which have come at major championships. At the season’s first major in the Masters last month, Scheffler finished runner-up to Rory McIlroy by one stroke, as Scheffler had an incredible weekend, shooting 65 and 68 in his final two rounds at Augusta National. Scheffler didn’t record a bogey over the weekend, making him the first player to accomplish this at the Masters since 1942. Following this, Scheffler kept his foot on the gas and finished runner-up at both the RBC Heritage and the Cadillac Championship.
Scheffler has been on the cusp of winning again and him skipping last week’s Truist Championship – which featured a $20 million purse and was played at Quail Hollow – shows how determined he is to win his fifth major this week. This PGA Championship will be played at Aronimink Golf Club in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Scheffler has never competed at Aronimink before, but he checks every box for this venue.
Measuring in at 7,394 yards, Aronimink is a long par 70 that requires an efficient driver, as two of the last three winners at this venue have finished the event top-10 in SG OTT. Per usual, Scheffler has been one of the best drivers in the world this season, ranking fourth in total driving and fifth in SG OTT. When we compare this field’s last 50 rounds at par 70s that are over 7,200 yards, Scheffler ranks first in strokes gained per round.
The greens at Aronimink are very large and complex surfaces, and having an excellent showing with your putter is a must at this venue. The last three winners at Aronimink have finished the week third, first and first in SGP, and Scheffler’s flat stick has been one of the best on the PGA TOUR this season, ranking 14th in SGP. Given how large the putting surfaces are at Aronimink, avoiding three putts will be crucial and Scheffler ranks 12th in three-putt avoidance this season.
With Aronimink being a traditional par 70 that features 12 par fours, being an elite par four scorer is also a necessity at this track. Each of the last three winners at Aronimink have finished the week top-four in par four scoring and guess who leads the PGA TOUR in par four scoring this season by a whopping 12 strokes? Scheffler. Lastly, Donald Ross designed Aronimink and the last time a Ross course hosted a PGA Championship was Oak Hil Country Club in 2023 and Scheffler nearly won that week, finishing runner-up by just two shots.
The writing is on the wall for him to win this week and Scheffler’s outright odds reflect that, with field-best +385 odds to win the PGA Championship on DraftKings Sportsbook.
