Russell Henley
With Jordan Spieth’s game trending up and the Texas native being a former winner at TPC San Antonio, he should be the most popular pick for one and done pools this week. Spieth makes a ton of sense, but rather than following the crowd, I like pivoting to Henley, who should be far less owned.
Henley has been one of the most consistent golfers in the world for quite some time. The 36-year-old has finished inside the top-20 in 13 of his last 14 starts and four of these finishes have been top-five results. Henley is coming off back-to-back starts in Florida and he finished T-6 at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and T-13 at THE PLAYERS Championship.
This season, Henley has shot under par in 19 of his 22 rounds and he ranks 12th in total strokes gained. Henley leads the PGA TOUR in driving accuracy, which is a great sign for TPC San Antonio, as being in the fairway is an advantage at this par 72. Of the last four winners at TPC San Antonio, two have finished the event top-10 in driving accuracy.
Henley has made 2-of-3 cuts at TPC San Antonio and he contended when he last visited this track in 2024, finishing T-4. Henley gained strokes across the board and finished the event second in SG APP. Additionally, the five-time PGA TOUR winner shot a 3-under 69 in three of his four rounds at TPC San Antonio.
This isn’t the only time Henley has flourished in the Lone Star State, either. The veteran won the 2017 Shell Houston Open by three shots and Henley ranks fourth among this field in strokes gained per round at Texas-based courses, excluding players who have only competed in the state once.
Sitting No. 10 in the world golf rankings, Henley is the second-highest ranked player in this field and he should contend this week. On DraftKings Sportsbook, Henley presents the third-best odds to win the Valero Texas Open at +1700.
