Big Brother is back and we’re taking a trip through time!

It’s not summer without Big Brother, and Season 28 kicked off with a bang, welcoming back Season 26 fan favorite Angela Murray as well as Survivior star Rick Devens. Will they enjoy their trip through the decades? Only time will tell (pun intended).

Prior to Thursday’s Big Brother Season 28 premiere, host Julie Chen Moonves gave CBS Mornings a tour of the house we’ll be looking in on for the rest of the summer. And as Julie said in the premiere, nostalgia is everywhere in a season that is sure to be historic.

Big Brother Season 28 Episode 1 recap

Home, Sweet, Home

After the obligatory introduction to the houseguests, it was time for the houseguests to move in and for game to begin.

Rome, Taylor, Kamu, Jason and Ashley are the first group in, followed by LaTrice, Lyric, Yash, Mallory and Barrett. LaTrice knows people will underestimate her because she is the matriarch of the house. Sparks are already flying, Ashley taking note of Rome and Barrett taking note of Ashley. Showmance loading? Meanwhile, Mallory is already vibing with Lyric. Did they just become best friends?

The last group includes Chuk, Drew, Haley and Melody. Once again romance is already in the air, with Chuk seeing a showmance in his future. You know who’s not feeling the love, however? Melody, who knows she’s going to be annoyed by the constantly-chatty Drew, who notes that he is already paranoia-maxxing. I’m with you, girl.

Safety Not Guaranteed

Julie calls everyone to living room where she reveals that for the first time in history no one currently in the house will become the first head of household. That’s because not everyone competing has moved in. All was revealed once everyone moved into the dining room, where it was explained that the table is no ordinary dining room table. Former contestant Enzo appears explaining that the dining table is actually a time machine.

Julie explains that the houseguests will travel through time in three groups, where they will square off for safety and will bring back three reality icons who will be competing with them this summer. Not everyone will get to play however, as only 12 houseguests will compete in the first competition of the summer and two will be out of luck and won’t compete for their safety. They have to find the vials of BB-tonium which add up to the 28 on Enzo’s jacket. Ultimately, Ashley and Barrett are left out in the cold.

Let’s Do The Time Warp Again

The first group to travel to the past is LaTrice, Rome, Mallory and Kamu who travel back to July 9, 1988, via the time-traveling dinner table. They land in a mall in Long, Beach, Calif. Whoever wins the comeptition will deliver a letter to the obnxious mall employee who gives them their task, instructing her to head to the BB house on July 9, 2026. Each contestant must balance eight pieces of mall merch on their unstable display racks. If anything falls, they have to start again. To win each constestant must hit their button and everything must hold in place for 10 seconds.

This competition seems like it should be right up rocket scientist Mallory’s alley, even if LaTrice thinks she has homecourt advantage being the only competitor who lived through the 80s. Surprisingly, it’s Rome who rights the rack and wins the challenge and safety. The door bell rings and reveals … ANGELA! No, your eyes aren’t crazy — she’s back and says she’s better than ever. But LaTrice thinks she better not get too comfortable.

The second group to travel through time is Haley, Drew, Chuk and Taylor, and they are sent back to July, 7, 2018. They land in the middle of what looks like a jungle (perhaps in Fiji, maybe) and have to find a path across a river using only two differently-sized planks. After an arduous trek, Chuk makes it across first and earns safety. His letter arrives in the hands of … JEFF PROBST, who thinks the recipient will be perfect for Big Brother. The doorbell rings to reveal … RICK DEVENS! And, newsalert, the self-described two-time Survivor loser says the air-conditioned house will be a breeze compared to the jungles of Fiji. And Angela, for what it’s worth is excited to play with him, even if others think he can’t be trusted.

The third group to travel through time is Yash, Melody, Lyric and Jason, and they are sent back to June, 27, 2010. They land in a club in Las Vegas where they have to eavesdrop in conversation and remember which drink names are said, or in some cases not said, the most. The winner will deliver their letter to the V.I.P. section. Melody is the first person eliminated … and the first slimed houseguest of season. Yash, to his surprise, is the next person to suffer the slime, leaving it down to Lyric and Jason. Ultimately, Jason locks in the correct answer first, winning the challenge and safety as well as the right to deliver his letter to the V.I.P. lounge. Back in the present, the doorbell rings, revealing … RACHEL REILLY. After a controversial exit in Season 27, the reality queen is back with a vengance and looking for that double crown.

Who’s The Boss

Since they didn’t get the chance to earn safety in the previous time travel challenges, Angela, Devens and Rachel were given the opportunity to compete to become the season’s first head of household. The entire cast was sent back to the Jurassic Period — 175 Million BC, to be exact.

As Rachel was delivering her royal address, reminding the newbies that if they take a shot at the queen they best not miss, she encountered a velociraptor, who like Keanu last summer, was OBSESSED with her. As a result Rachel took an unfortunate trip into a volcano, coming to an untimely demise. Julie announced that her iconic replacement would be announced on Big Brother: Unlocked on Friday, with the tease that Julie travelled back in time to December 20, 2023.
