The Seattle Mariners take to Petco Park for a pivotal interleague showdown against the San Diego Padres. With the Padres favored at -161 on the moneyline, they’re primed for a strong performance, especially with their standout rookie pitcher, Stephen Kolek, taking the mound. Rivalry of the western border? What’s the deal here? Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Friday baseball game between the Padres and the Mariners.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Padres vs. Mariners prediction, preview
How’s a flawless 0.00 ERA over 14.1 innings to start the season sound for Mr. Kolek? It speaks volumes about his effectiveness, and the Mariners will be the next challenge for Kolek’s emerging dominance. Kolek has posted a 2.75 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a 0.91 WHIP, highlighting his elite control and efficiency. Meanwhile, Seattle’s pitching, led by Logan Evans, has been a work in progress. His 6.60 ERA paints a picture of struggles, particularly when facing aggressive lineups like San Diego’s. Evans has allowed a .385 BA to right-handed batters this month, fueling concerns against a Padres lineup loaded with power.
Offensively, the Padres are hitting their stride after a post-win-streak rut. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado have been on fire; Manny leads the team with a scorching .340 average. Tatis has added 11 homers to the mix, and the Padres’ offense is thriving despite a relatively low home run count overall (39). Tatis ranks eighth in MLB in homers (11) and 31st in RBIs (26)—it’s legit elite power. Their .264 batting average ranks second in the league, and they’ve been able to maintain discipline at the plate, leading to consistently high on-base percentages and opportunities to generate runs. Xander Bogaerts has walked 20 times this season, anchoring the team’s plate discipline with a .333 OBP.
Seattle’s lineup, meanwhile, has been infuriatingly inconsistent. How’s that for a year-after-year refrain. Though they’ve hit 56 home runs, they rank 20th in team batting average (.239). It’s been hard to trust their offensive firepower, especially in hostile environments. Cal Raleigh has been, really, the only standout, leading the Mariners with 13 home runs, but overall, the Mariners have lacked the depth and consistency to match up with top-tier pitchers.
Raleigh’s 32 total bases against ground-ball pitchers (third in MLB) make him a threat in this matchup. His splits and recent hot streak could give the Mariners hope, but the team will need a breakout performance from others in the lineup to support their struggling pitching staff. Julio Rodríguez’s .229 average is at the heart of the M’s inconsistencies, and J-Rod sports just a 7.5% walk rate this season.
Mariners vs. Padres pick, best bet
Defensively, the Padres hold a notable enough edge that it affects the betting lean. They rank among the top teams in MLB in ERA (3.33) and WHIP (1.17), and their bullpen has been a significant strength. San Diego ranks second in ERA at home (3.52), giving them a formidable advantage at Petco Park. In contrast, the Mariners’ 4.02 ERA ranks in the lower half of the league, and they’ve struggled with consistency on the mound away from the PNW, too. Evans’ fly-ball tendencies, combined with San Diego’s power-hitting ability, could lead to problems in this matchup, especially at Petco Park, where fly balls tend to carry.
Betting insights lean heavily toward San Diego in this spot. The Padres have a solid 73.9% win rate when favored, and they’ve been excellent at home, boasting a 16-5 record. San Diego has covered the run line in 15 of their last 19 home games. The Mariners, though competitive, have faltered on the road, and with Evans on the mound, their chances seem slim against a Padres team in total stride. The Mariners are 3-16 when trailing entering the ninth inning, making comebacks against strong bullpen teams like San Diego difficult.
With Kolek’s impeccable form, and the Padres’ superior bullpen and offense, this game should lean in San Diego’s favor. Take them on the runline.
Best bet: Padres -1.5 (+125) vs. Mariners
