One of America’s greatest thespians, Nicolas Cage, will be taking on his most challenging roles to date — John Madden. Boom!
Yes the famed actor will be playing the famed coach/broadcaster/video game namesake in a new biopic from David O. Russell.
“Nicolas Cage, one of our greatest and most original actors, will portray the best of the American spirit of originality, fun, and determination in which anything is possible as beloved national legend John Madden,” Russell said in a statement, according to Variety. “Together with the ferocious style, focus, and inspired individualism of Al Davis, owner of the underdog Oakland Raiders, the feature will be about the joy, humanity and genius that was John Madden in a wildly inventive, cool world of the 1970s.”
But what did Mike Golic Jr. and Mike Golic Sr. think about the casting on Friday’s GoJo and Golic?
“I would never, never have guessed that in a million years, that Nicolas Cage is gonna play John Madden,” Senior says.
Senior says it was an incredible life and career for Madden, who won a Super Bowl as coach of the Raiders before transitioning to a Hall of Fame career in the broadcast booth. GoJo notes that the movie is expected at least in part to be about the rise of the legendary Madden football game, which is out today.
As GoJo says some folks have pointed out, Cage it could be argued looks more like vintage Al Davis than Madden. So it will be curious to see how they go about this. But, GoJo says he is one of those people who chooses to embrace seeing Cage in any setting because he is so willing to play the weirdest roles of all time. GoJo fully embraces everything Cage does, even if he bastardized the southern accent in Con Air.
But, perhaps we can all agree that Cage is closer to Madden than another name Senior points out was rumored to be around the project — Hugh Jackman! Yes, that Hugh Jackman, the Wolverine. As GoJo points out, as seen in the recent Deadpool and Wolverine, Hugh is too Jacked, man, to play Madden, the man of turducken fame. Even Deadpool himself was checking out those abs!
Nic Cage is just a character in Hollywood, man, and we’ll wait with bated breath to see what he does as John Madden. Boom!
