Things can change just that quickly in the Big Brother house.
A mere one week ago I moved Kamu up eight spots in my power rankings all the way up to No. 3, just behind Dee and Devens. Then Kamu got over his skis, tried to make Dee a target and paid the price, becoming the sixth houseguest evicted from Big Brother Season 28 (read my colleague Bryan Armetta’s Thursday recap here — thanks for filling in for me Bryan while I was on vacation!).

Notable Rankings
This was a really hard week to come up with these rankings. Truthfully, I didn’t love anyone’s week. Dee and Devens remain atop the rankings because they successfully:
- Got Dee off the block
- Made a major move in renominating and then evicting Kamu
- Regained a little of their mystique in the process, immediately sending home someone with their names in his mouth
All that said, Dee had some bad reads, Devens had some bad play in threatening Drew and Barrett and in general they thought all they had to do was play the Diamond Power of Veto and get what they wanted. They became a little too complacent until the very end that Melody and Mallory were just going to go along with their plan as Kamu and Yash were conversely putting on the full court press to keep Kamu in the game to specifically target the Icons. It continues a trend of sloppy play from the Icons, but they live to fight another day and other players who could have claimed the top also fumbled in a big way (see below).
All that said, here are some of the houseguests making moves.
3. Yash (+3)
If things had played out differently, Yash could have overtaken Dee and Devens, moving all the way to the top. For a novice player who looked cooked in Week 1, he’s come an incredible distance. Not to mention that he emerged as the second biggest comp threat in the house behind Kamu (who obviously was just evicted). But his game … philosophy … if you want to call it that, a bad read and a MAJOR mistake he compounded on prevented him from rising up to the top of the mountain.
Yash winning HOH and Power of Veto in the same week makes a major statement. On top of that, it was a knockout comp and the legendary OTEV, major additions to his game resume. Yash had all the power this week and looked to be sitting pretty, in addition to strengthening a Final 2 with Kamu as well as his bond with Taylor and theoretically LaLa (see below for more). But as much as I wanted to give him credit (and did), he made a couple of major mistakes.
The first thing he did that I’m going to take issue with is his “strategy” for the week, i.e. no bros on the block. It was kind of strange to say right off the bat that he absolutely did not want to send a guy home this week, but that’s kind of indicative of his game to this point. That plan, obviously limited his options for nominees. Putting up Dee and Angela makes sense, but putting up Haley (who he was trying to potentially pull in) did not. It made even less sense to leave Haley up as a nominee after winning OTEV. This is where the bad read came in, as he thought they had Drew (they didn’t) and could afford to leave Haley on the block. Would Devens have felt safe to put Kamu up on the block without Haley being up there? We’ll never know, but at the very least Yash should have replaced Haley with Barrett and more likely Devens himself, given that he mentioned multiple times he doesn’t trust him anymore.
Any way you slice it, losing your top ally on your HOH week when you had ALL THE POWER and could have prevented it if not for major strategy and gameplay mistakes is a huge L for Yash. Not to mention that winning both comps puts a major target on his back. But I do still have to give the man some credit for those comp wins, even if I didn’t like how he moved in power.
6. Mallory (+1)/7. Melody (+2)
This pair is in an interesting place.
Mallory, to be honest, has more of a reputation than she’s earned as a physical threat at this point. Yes, she is the pipe queen, but that was a while ago. And Melody has yet to win anything. At some point, I really want them to find themselves some measure of power, ANY measure of power in this game. A Mallory or Melody HOH would be very interesting.
Also interesting would be if they decided to break away from Drew and Barrett. We already saw the difficult position Drew put them in this week and Barrett has basically been M.I.A., spending the entire week cuddling a bit with Dee. Barrett is bringing nothing to the table to the For the American People alliance, and in many ways is actively hurting them with his rat behavior. Yes, he’s theoretically a number for them, but I’m not even sure he would put them over the Icons, even after all his complaining about his position in the Toolshed/Crossovers.
They’ve also become more activated against the Icons, despite teaming up with them to form the Mosh Pit. That alliance is not long for this world, with an implosion possible as soon as this week. If Mallory and Melody jump ship to the Yash-Taylor-LaLa side of the house, it creates a 5v5 dynamic with Haley up for grabs. With Kamu gone, Yash is the strongest comp beast left in the game, so from that angle such a move would make sense. And to be honest, I think losing Mallory and Melody does more to hurt Drew and Barrett than it hurts Mallory and Melody. If they’re looking for their best chance to start targeting the Icons, siding with Yash and Taylor and their side soon makes the most sense and could be a boon for Mallory and Melody’s games.
8. Drew (-)
Drew is a frustrating player. I think he does too much, doesn’t have a great feel on when to rat and when to hold back, and in general is just a bit too eager. I also thought he proclaimed he was putting his four-person alliance with Mallory, Melody and Barrett over the Icons (finally). But then, he sold out that alliance to the Icons multiple times this week to the point where they’re nearly done with him.
Now, he was able to influence Melody and Mallory a bit on the Wednesday live feeds to flip back against Kamu. But that not only left a sour taste in their mouths, but it also led Devens to threaten him and Barrett that they were responsible for Melody and Mallory’s votes and if things didn’t go as planned he was going to blow up their games. And Yash is blaming him most for Kamu being gone. So really, Drew earned favor with no one despite exerting influence and getting the result he wanted, which was Kamu gone.
Drew really should have stayed loyal to the For the American People alliance and continued to build trust with them rather than trying to continue to play the middle. Eventually he’s going to be left in a no man’s land if he’s not careful, and he already seems dangerously close to losing his closest ally (and showmance partner) Melody. And if he’s really throwing comps, that needs to end. At some point you need to make a move — be it choosing a side or being willing to get some blood on your hands as HOH — in order to make an impact enough on the game to have a coherent narrative when it comes to the jury vote. And right now, Drew doesn’t have it.
