Rome Odunze just posted his first double-digit PPR game of the season, catching six of seven targets for 94 yards against the Jets. Caleb Williams did not practice this week with a hamstring injury, which hands the offense to Tyson Bagent again for a trip to Green Bay. Find out whether you should start or sit Rome Odunze in Week 5.
Rome Odunze Start or Sit Advice for Week 5
Odunze has settled into a clear role as Chicago’s vertical option. He owns 38.4% of the team’s air yards, well ahead of Luther Burden III at 27.4%, despite ranking third among Bears receivers in targets with 20. He averages 16.6 yards per catch and 11.7 yards per target, so his production does not require heavy volume to land.
The trend is pointing up. Odunze posted three straight weeks between 7.2 and 7.4 PPR points to open the season, a steady but unspectacular floor, before the breakout against New York. That Week 4 game also showed something new, with 32 of his 37 YAC on the season coming in that one outing.
Green Bay’s defense is also shorthanded. Micah Parsons is on the physically unable to perform list and will not practice this week, and linebacker Edgerrin Cooper is out for the season with a torn Achilles. Losing that much talent up front gives a backup quarterback more breathing room than he would normally expect at Lambeau Field.
The Biggest Fantasy Risk for Rome Odunze in Week 5
The quarterback change is the obvious concern. Chicago’s passing numbers, 232.8 yards per game with a 93.5 team passer rating, were built with Williams. Bagent steps into a game where Odunze’s value depends on throws traveling down the field, and a backup is often more comfortable keeping the ball short.
Green Bay’s coverage makes that worse. The Packers allow just 68.0 air yards per game to wide receivers against a league average of 104.4, and only 10.9 yards per catch against a league mark of 13.3. Receivers catch 70.8% of their targets against Green Bay, but more than half of the yardage comes after the catch, at 71.0 YAC per game. That is a profile built for underneath receivers, not a field stretcher.
Those numbers do come with a caveat. The Packers have faced Minnesota, the Jets, Atlanta and Tampa Bay, offenses throwing 15% below league average against them, so the coverage has not been tested by many strong passing attacks. That cuts both ways. The soft schedule flatters the defense overall, but it also means Green Bay has not been asked to defend many deep shots.
Target competition limits his floor as well. Burden leads the receivers with 29 targets and Kalif Raymond has 23, while Burden and Colston Loveland each have five red zone targets to Odunze’s two.
Fantasy Outlook for Rome Odunze in Week 5
Odunze is a Start in Week 5, but only as a FLEX option with a lower floor than usual. His downfield role is secure and Green Bay’s pass rush is depleted, which gives him a path to another useful week.
The quarterback downgrade and a defense that limits air yards keep him out of safer territory. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues can feel comfortable using him at FLEX, but anyone with a steadier option attached to a healthy starting quarterback should lean that way.
