Fresh off a record-breaking August at the box office, there aren’t too many blockbusters lined up for Labor Day weekend. So with Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey still dominating cineplexes worldwide, there are a few smaller films that have a chance to thrive in the margins. Director Adam Wingard’s Onslaught hit theaters on September 4, hoping to squeeze through the cracks and become a breakout hit. So how much business did the A24 action movie reel in over its first four days on the big screen?
Here is a breakdown of how Onslaught performed at the box office this past weekend:
Onslaught Box Office
Onslaught made an estimated $1.88 million at the box office between September 4 and September 6. Adding in projections for the Labor Day holiday, it made $2.33 million. Adam Wingard’s last two movies – Godzilla vs. Kong and Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire – opened to $31.6 million and $80.0 million in 2021 and 2024, respectively. Before he joined Legendary’s Monsterverse franchise, however, he had Blair Witch open to $9.6 million in 2016 and You’re Next debut with $7.0 million in 2013. And while Onslaught is one of Adria Arjona’s first lead Hollywood parts, maybe it could set the table for her rumored takeover of the Wonder Woman role in next summer’s Superman sequel, Man of Tomorrow.
According to Deadline, Onslaught made $275K in domestic Thursday night previews. That cash is technically counted as part of the film’s $782K Friday gross. It proceeded to make $548K on Saturday and $553K on Sunday. Onslaught posted the eighth-largest domestic opening weekend by an R-rated action movie so far this year. The Odyssey leads that group with $123.5 million, followed by Mortal Kombat II, Crime 101, The Dog Stars, Mutiny, Good Luck, Have Fun, Don’t Die and In the Grey. Onslaught also slots in as A24’s No. 6 opener of the year, coming in behind Backrooms‘ $81.4 million, The Drama‘s $14.4 million, Undertone at $9.1 million, How to Make a Killing at $3.5 million and The Death of Robin Hood at $2.9 million.
Looking beyond the United States and Canada, there aren’t any overseas numbers for Onslaught just yet. Looking at Adam Wingard’s filmography, Onslaught isn’t going to sniff Godzilla vs. Kong $470.1 million total or Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire‘s $572.1 million finish. Even Blair Witch‘s $45.2 million seems like a tall order, while You’re Next‘s $26.9 million could be a high bar given this slow slatrt. Compared to other A24 releases from 2026, Onslaught might be more likely to finish around How to Make a Killing‘s $21.7 million and Undertone‘s $21.6 million global gross than The Invite‘s $51.8 million – let alone The Drama‘s $132.5 million or Backrooms‘ $394.1 million.
