MLB Grand Slam Payout Picks
Nolan Arenado, Diamondbacks
Of all the starting pitchers on the slate on Monday, Jeffrey Springs of the Athletics has the second-highest HR/9. He has given up 26 homers on the season, with right-handed hitters like Arenado connecting on 20 of those 26 homers while posting a .274 batting average and a .376 wOBA. Springs has allowed at least four runs in eight of his last nine starts and has served up 14 homers in his last seven starts.
Arenado has hit four homers in his last 10 games with a 52% hard-hit rate and a 16% barrel rate. Historically, he puts up good power numbers against lefties, and he usually hits low enough in the batting order that he has a good chance to bat with runners on base. He has been making good enough contact and has enough momentum to make him a good value at his price.
Andres Chaparro, Nationals
The Nationals go from Sutter Health Park to Coors Field–what a homer-friendly way to start the second half! On Monday night, they’ll take on lefty Kyle Freeland with warm temperatures and the wind blowing out. The rarified air of Coors Field should give the Nats a boost, after they started the second half with 29 runs in three games in Sacramento. Chapparo was a huge part of their 23-run outburst on Friday with a pair of homers and eight RBI. The 27-year-old is one of the team’s best top right-handed power options in their current lineup against lefties, and he has three homers and three doubles in his 62 at-bats in the majors this season. At Triple-A, Chaparro hit six homers in his 35 games with the Rochester Red Wings.
He should be in a good spot against lefty Kyle Freeland, who has allowed 18 homers in 17 games this season with a 1.57 WHIP. He has allowed 16 of those 18 homers to right-handed hitters like Chaparro, and seven of those homers in his eight starts at home, where he has a 6.38 ERA. Chaparro already has three homers this month, and he’s a sneaky option at Coors Field against a lefty.
