What a tournament this has been so far. We started with 48 teams, and now we’re down to eight. Below I will rank all eight remaining teams ahead of the quarter-finals from best to worst.
1. France
There’s a reason why the French have the best odds to win the tournament right now. They look unstoppable, and their attacking options are endless. The attack is of course headlined by Kylian Mbappé, but it’s the surrounding pieces that make France so dangerous and hard to defend. Ousmane Dembélé, Bradley Barcola, Désiré Doué and Michael Olise have all chipped in during this run and are some of the best at their respective positions in the world. France have won all five of their games in regulation with a combined score of 14-2. Wow. Up next for them, they face Morocco in the quarter-finals. If they get past that, the winner of Spain vs. Belgium awaits them in the semi-final.

2. Spain
Spain have taken a different approach to France in the World Cup. They’ve still scored nine times, but they are the only remaining team that has yet to concede a goal in this tournament. After playing five times and already facing the likes of Uruguay and Portugal, that’s extremely impressive. Their striker Mikel Oyarzabal leads the way in terms of goals, scoring four times so far. It’s been a team effort after that, with four other players each scoring once, along with an own goal in the 4-0 win against Saudi Arabia. The scary part about Spain is that Lamine Yamal has yet to play at his best so far. He only has one goal contribution in five games. After his performance at the 2024 Euros, there is still plenty to improve on for the young star to get back where he was in that competition.

3. Argentina
Lionel Messi continues to defy logic and Father Time. Even at 39 years old, his eight goals are good enough to put him in the lead of the Golden Boot race with one more than Kylian Mbappé and Erling Haaland. The concern for Argentina is that they have looked vulnerable in the knockout stage. They needed extra time to beat Cape Verde, and then they fell behind 2-0 to Egypt in the Round of 16 before completing a terrific comeback and getting a 3-2 win. The good news for them is the pathway they have to the final. Up next for them is Switzerland, and then they would face the winner of England vs. Norway in the semi-final. When you look at France and Spain on the other side of the bracket, it’s not a bad place to be if you’re Argentina. This team has a ton of experience in these kinds of situations after winning the World Cup in 2022 and they can rely on that to make another deep run in 2026.

4. England
The question with England is always if they are able to get over the line. They have constantly made it to the latter stages of both the World Cup and Euros recently, but always fall short. They had a brutal test against Mexico in the Round of 16, but showed resilience in a 3-2 win despite playing the majority of the second half with 10 men. It’s another tough test for them next, as they face a Norway team who have surprised many people. If Norway can play the way they did against Brazil, this should be a great game. England, however, have much better players on paper and should have just enough quality to get through. Unfortunately for them, the game isn’t played on paper. It’s been the Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham show for the English, who have already combined for 10 goals in this World Cup.

5. Norway
Norway come in at fifth in my power rankings. They might be considered a Cinderella story at this point in the tournament, but they deserve to be here. They’ve won four of their five matches in this World Cup, defeating some good teams along the way such as Senegal, Ivory Coast and Brazil. Their only blip came against France, and that was a game in which they rested their starters as they had already secured their qualification to the knockout stage. The Brazil performance was very telling, as it shows they’re not necessarily underdogs. Norway were unbeaten in European qualification and came into this tournament in red-hot form. They outplayed Brazil in the Round of 16 and will look to do the same against England. It’s no surprise that Erling Haaland has been doing Erling Haaland things so far in this tournament, scoring seven times in only four games.

6. Belgium
Belgium would’ve been further down my list if it wasn’t for their performance against the United States. They made a few surprising changes to their team, leaving Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku on the bench in that game. That gamble certainly paid off as they looked the best they have in this tournament by a mile, on course to beating the USA 4-1. The Belgians got off to a rocky start in this tournament and had one foot out the door in the Round of 32 against Senegal before rallying back to win in extra time. Ever since they trailed 2-0 to Senegal in that game, they’ve looked like a different team. The bad news for them is that up next, they get Spain.

7. Morocco
Morocco have made another deep World Cup run in 2026. In 2022, they made it to the semi-finals and are one step away from matching that in this tournament. They are definitely battle-tested, having already faced Brazil and the Netherlands in this tournament. Both of those games finished 1-1 in regulation, which shows they can compete with some of the best teams. Similar to Belgium, it’s only going to get tougher for them in the quarter-finals as they face France. They won’t be favorites in that game for sure, but I expect them to compete and to push the French to their limits. Bayern Munich’s Ismael Saibari has led the way for them in terms of scoring with three goals in five games.

8. Switzerland
The Swiss had a rough start to their World Cup, drawing 1-1 with Qatar in the opening match. Since then, they rattled off three straight wins before they were matched up with Colombia in the Round of 16. The game against Colombia wasn’t the easiest on the eye, but Switzerland got it done in a penalty shootout. This is a team that still has quality; otherwise, they wouldn’t have made it this far. When you compare them to the other seven teams however, they are the weakest in my opinion. The good news for them is their defense has been rock solid in the knockout rounds, as they kept clean sheets against both Algeria and Colombia. Up next are the defending champions, Argentina.
