Argentina completed the best comeback of the World Cup so far in the Round of 16 against Egypt. Mostafa Ziko scored in the 69th minute to give Egypt a 2-0 lead at the time, before Argentina turned up the heat. Cristian Romero pulled one back after 79 minutes, and Lionel Messi equalized just four minutes later. A brilliant cross from Lautaro Martínez onto the head of Enzo Fernández proved to be the winner for the Argentinians in the 93rd minute. That’s two games in a row now where Argentina have avoided a scare. Cape Verde took them to deep waters in the Round of 32 before Argentina found a way to win it in extra time. It doesn’t matter how you get here, however. Argentina are now in the quarter-finals, and can start to believe that they can make another run to the final.
Switzerland had a much different game in the Round of 16, beating Colombia in a penalty shootout after no goals were scored in regulation or extra time. The Swiss had a rough start to their World Cup, drawing 1-1 with Qatar in the opening match. Since then, however, they’ve improved every match. They beat Bosnia 4-1 and then Canada 2-1 to win their group. They had a comfortable win in the Round of 32 against Algeria, defeating them 2-0. The Swiss then faced their biggest test in the Round of 16 against Colombia, and prevailed on penalties. They defended well for the entire match and have now kept two clean sheets in a row in the knockout rounds. Unfortunately for them, this match will be even more difficult as they face the defending champions Argentina.
The winner of this match will face the winner of the England/Norway game in the semi-finals.
