No. 3 seed Utah Tech walks into this WAC quarterfinal at 18-14 overall and 11-7 in league play, while No. 6 seed Abilene Christian arrives at 14-18 and 5-13 after surviving Wednesday night’s opener 84-78 over Tarleton State in Las Vegas. The records matter, but the current-version frame matters more. Utah Tech closed the regular season 7-3 in its last 10 and spent the final week chasing the top of the league; ACU closed the regular season 4-6 in its last 10, then had to burn a full extra game just to get back on the floor against the Trailblazers. Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Utah Tech Trailblazers and the Abilene Christian Wildcats.

Utah Tech vs. Abilene Christian prediction, preview
The Trailblazers average 76.9 points per game, shoot 47.1% from the field and 34.5% from three, and they lead the WAC in both made threes per game at 7.9 and fewest turnovers per game at 12.2. ACU’s profile is the opposite kind of loud. The Wildcats force mistakes at a national level, ranking third in the country in turnovers forced per game at 16.5 and fourth in steals at 9.8, but they also allow opponents to shoot 48.7% overall and 39.1% from three. That is a dangerous trade against this opponent. Utah Tech scored 80, 85, 67, and 101 in four of its last five games; ACU, before the Tarleton win, scored 81, 67, 48, and 57 across its previous four. One side is playing a cleaner brand of offense right now, and one side is still living on disruption and whistle volume.
The recent player layer leans Utah Tech too. Ethan Potter (F) is at 16.3 points and 8.0 rebounds on 58.9% shooting for the season, and his last three meaningful markers were 17 points and six boards at Tarleton, 25 points on 11-of-14 shooting against ACU, and 28 points, 10 rebounds, and five assists against Utah Valley. Chance Trujillo (G) averages 12.3 points, leads the team with 67 made threes, and has recently posted 19 at Tarleton, a season-high 24 against ACU, and 18 against Utah Valley. Jusaun Holt (G) gives Utah Tech 12.0 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists, then shows up here off 19 at Tarleton, a career-high 28 at Southern Utah, and 16 points with 10 rebounds in the double-overtime Utah Valley loss. ACU has real shot-creators, but the form is shakier. Bradyn Hubbard (F) averages 16.2 points and 4.6 rebounds and already has 501 points this season; Cbo Newton (G) is at 10.1 points and dropped a career-high 27 in the last meeting with Utah Tech; Rich Smith (G) averages 9.6 points, 4.0 rebounds, 145 assists, and 58 steals; Yaniel Rivera (G) just hung a career-high 20 on Tarleton. The difference is that Utah Tech brings three reliable recent scorers into this game, while ACU’s punch still feels more sequence-dependent.
Abilene Christian vs. Utah Tech pick, best bet
The Wildcats can pressure the ball, create runouts, and turn a neat game into a nasty one. The problem is that Utah Tech already saw those scripts and still won all three meetings. The Trailblazers swept the series 79-64, 76-70, and 85-81, and they led at halftime every time: 40-24, 42-31, and 47-38. In the Jan. 29 win, ACU produced 28 points off turnovers and 25 fast-break points and still lost by six. In the Feb. 26 meeting, ACU turned it over only seven times, got 27 from Newton and 23 from Hubbard, and still lost because Utah Tech shot 61.1% from the field and 42.1% from three. That is why this matchup keeps coming back to Utah Tech’s shot quality. ACU has already landed major parts of its underdog script, and Utah Tech still found the cleaner answers.
ACU had to play Wednesday night, and it needed 33 made free throws on 45 attempts to get through Tarleton. That matters because the Wildcats were already coming in off a rough close to the regular season: losses of 74-67 at Utah Valley, 87-48 at California Baptist, and 64-57 at home against UT Arlington. Utah Tech has had five days to sit with the Utah Valley double-overtime loss, and even in defeat its core looked live with 28 from Potter, 18 from Trujillo, and 16 points with 10 rebounds from Holt. Add in the coaching note—Jon Judkins was named WAC Coach of the Year after leading Utah Tech to an 11-win improvement, a third-place finish, and the program’s best Division I regular season win total—and the context starts to look even more pro-Utah Tech. The basketball translation is simple: the fresher team with the cleaner spacing and more stable three-man scoring engine should be better positioned to land the first run before ACU’s pressure and whistle game can muddy the last 20 minutes.
That is why the best bet is not the full-game side and not the total. It is Utah Tech 1H -0.5 (-115). The Trailblazers have already won the first half of this matchup by 16, 11, and 9 points, which is an average halftime margin of +12.0. They scored 40, 42, and 47 in those first halves, while ACU managed 24, 31, and 38. The full-game spread can still cash, but ACU’s best volatility tools—steals, scramble points, foul pressure—have more time to show up over 40 minutes. The first-half ticket isolates the part of the game Utah Tech has consistently owned: the opening script, the cleaner shotmaking, and the steadier offensive floor.
