Both Coventry and Fulham know what urgency feels like right now. It’s still early in the season, but if the campaign ended now, both sides would be in the drop zone. When you feel like a relegation-level club, that urgency kicks in fast, and every point starts to feel crucial. That urgency will show as these two sides clash in Coventry.
Fulham are +125 moneyline favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook, with a +245 draw. Coventry’s moneyline is set at +215.
Coventry vs. Fulham Pick, Best Bet
After Coventry’s start to their Premier League campaign, many fans may have accepted relegation as an inevitability. They lost their first four contests by a combined margin of 10-0. But they quickly got back on track. Jay Dasilva buried a second-half winner to beat Nottingham Forest 1-0, securing their first three points of the season. The Sky Blues continued their momentum with a 4-1 win over Newcastle. A loss to Tottenham took the wind out of their sails, but all things considered, six points in seven contests isn’t a bad start.
They’ll need to pick up the pace to stay above the drop zone. According to FotMob, Coventry have the lowest average match score at 6.50. They’re second-to-last in possession and have created the fewest big chances; low possession combined with poor creation is a recipe for disaster. The defense hasn’t been good enough to play behind the ball this often, creating far too many problems for Coventry to solve. Up and down the pitch, the Sky Blues have plenty of room for improvement.
Creating opportunity hasn’t been a problem for Fulham. One of the league’s best possession and passing teams, Fulham lead the league in total touches taken in the opposition box. But they haven’t converted that possession into quality chances, sitting 12th in total big chances generated and 10th in total xG. Their big purchase from Real Madrid, Gonzalo García, has disappointed with one league goal in seven starts. If he and the rest of their forwards can start putting some laces through these opportunities, things can perk up for Fulham.
The defense has been solid as the Cottagers circle the wagons. Antonee Robinson continues to do excellent work up and down the left side, while Bernd Leno remains a solid Premier League backstop. The center of the defense has been up and down, but this new group needs time to gel. If the back line remains stout and their attack picks it up a tick, they will be above the drop zone in no time.
It all comes down to Fulham attacking during long spells of possession. Key passers like Alex Iwobi and Shea Charles will have to move the ball east-west rather than north-south, and their forwards must be ready to make the most of the limited space they get. If Fulham can be comfortable in possession and find a couple of goals, the points are there for the taking. I’m counting on the Cottagers to deliver the win on the road.
