Virginia and NC State get to Charlotte with the same external stakes and very different internal rhythms. Virginia is 27-4 and rested as the No. 2 seed. NC State is 20-12 and arrives off Wednesday’s 98-88 win over Pitt, a game where the Wolfpack shot a season-best 60.8% from the field, hit 13-of-23 from three, and went 23-of-27 at the line. That box score absolutely matters because it confirms the ceiling is still there. It also frames the real question for Thursday: can NC State reproduce its hottest offensive blend on short rest against the most stable defensive front it has seen all week? Below is my preview, prediction, and pick for tonight’s college basketball game between the Virginia Cavaliers and the NC State Wolf Pack.
Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games all season, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.
Virginia vs. NC State prediction, preview
Virginia’s recent run has had range to it. The Cavaliers went to Atlanta and won 94-68, survived an 86-83 game against Miami, handled NC State 90-61, then closed with two tighter, more deliberate wins over Wake Forest and Virginia Tech. That matters because it shows a team that can still look like itself in different temperatures. NC State’s current version is louder, but less settled. The Wolfpack just dropped 98 on Pitt with their best shooting night of the season, yet the runway into that game was an 84-85 loss to Stanford, a 64-93 loss to Duke, and a 90-96 overtime loss at Notre Dame. One side is arriving with a ceiling game fresh in memory. The other is arriving with a month of evidence that it can win on its own terms whether the afternoon opens up or turns grimy.
That is why Virginia’s structural case feels more like a March case than a February one. The Cavaliers excellent in the categories that age well in tournament buildings. They average 80.9 points, have hit 80 or more 18 times, lead the ACC in rebounds, offensive rebounds, and blocks, rank second in field-goal defense, and sit third in three-point defense. The current version of Virginia is not dependent on one hot scorer carrying the whole operation. Thijs De Ridder gives them frontcourt skill and shotmaking at 15.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Ugonna Onyenso anchors the back line at 2.6 blocks per game, and Virginia’s two-center rotation with Onyenso and Johann Grünloh has become one of the real pressure points in this team’s late-season identity. NC State can make the game beautiful for stretches, but Virginia is built to make it physically expensive for 40 minutes.
Quadir Copeland and Ven-Allen Lubin are absolutely live enough to make NC State dangerous. Copeland just carved up Pitt for 24 points and eight assists, and Lubin added 18 while living at the line. That is the version of the Wolfpack that can scare anybody: Copeland touching the paint, Lubin finishing through contact, shooters feeding off the tilt.
But Virginia’s current answers are deeper and calmer. De Ridder is the obvious headliner, yet the more important note is that seven different Cavaliers have led them in scoring this season. Malik Thomas can give them a perimeter scoring punch. Sam Lewis can stretch a defense. Dallin Hall can steady the game without needing it to belong to him. And behind all of that sits the center pairing that has turned the rim into a hostile workplace. NC State has the more combustible creators. Virginia has the more reliable web.
NC State vs. Virginia pick, best bet
Yesterday, the Wolfpack shot 60.8% against Pitt, went 13-of-23 from three, put six players in double figures, and looked exactly like the kind of tournament team that can hijack a bracket for two days if the offense keeps breathing. The problem is that their defensive floor has not traveled with them. Before the Pitt game, they had just allowed 96 at Notre Dame, 93 to Duke, and 85 to Stanford, and even Wednesday’s win still asked them to survive 88 points from Pitt. So the bet is not really about whether NC State has enough offense. It clearly does. The question is whether that offense can stay incandescent for a second straight afternoon against a team that rebounds at an elite rate, protects the basket with length, and is comfortable winning a possession-by-possession game after the first rush of adrenaline has burned off.
NC State gets Charlotte, the emotional lift of already having won in the building, and the psychological freedom that comes from dropping 98 the day before. Virginia gets the more valuable tournament asset: clarity. The Cavaliers have spent the last two weeks showing they can play above 90, survive in the 80s, or close out games in the mid-70s without drifting away from themselves. Ryan Odom’s first Virginia team has already won 27 games, is 3-1 on neutral floors, and has advanced to this quarterfinal with a style that looks designed for back-to-back days in March. That is why the earlier meetings with NC State should sit in the background, not the foreground. They are not the proof of the bet. They simply rhyme with the broader truth of the current versions: Virginia’s strengths are the sturdier ones.
That is why the play is still Virginia -5.5. NC State has a real door here if Copeland bends the game downhill again, Lubin wins the whistle, and the perimeter heat from Wednesday survives into Thursday. But Virginia does not need the game to look one specific way to get margin. The Cavaliers can get there on the glass, at the rim, through a deeper rotation, or simply by making NC State work harder for every clean touch than Pitt ever could. In this round, that usually matters more than the memory of one brilliant offensive afternoon.
Best bet: Virginia -5.5. Final score: Virginia 82, NC State 74.
