Minnesota Twins at Toronto Blue Jays prediction, pick for Monday 8/25/25

This is the opener of a three-game series in Toronto between the Blue Jays and visiting Minnesota Twins.

Joe Ryan is scheduled to pitch for Minnesota, while Max Scherzer is slated to start for Toronto.

Joe Ryan has been simply marvelous. In 143 innings, his ERA is 2.77. The FIP is higher at 3.25, as the BABIP is .259, but it’s still pretty good. Ryan has had a BB/9 over 2 just once in his career. It’s at 1.76 this season. The strikeout rate is a healthy 28.2% while the HR/9 is a career-low 1.07. The barrel rate is high at 11% while the hard hit rate is 41.4%, so it’s not all sunshine and unicorns. And his flyball rate is 49%.

Ryan has been lethal against righties, as the K-BB% is 28.8! It’s only 17.9% against lefties and they have hit 10 of the 17 home runs. Ryan has been better at home.

Ryan has allowed more than three earned runs in four of 24 starts. He’s gone at least six innings 13 times. He faced Toronto back in early June, going five innings, walking three, striking out six and allowing two earned runs on four hits.

Against right-handed pitching, the Blue Jays have struck out at the 30th-highest rate while having the 14th-best ISO. Their wOBA is fifth-best in MLB.

Max Scherzer has a 3.6 ERA through 60 innings this season. It’s a far cry from his elite 2.5-ERA days, but he’s 40 years old! Now, the FIP is higher at 4.48. The BABIP is .250 while the strand rate is 83.3%. He’s only issued 15 walks but has served up 11 home runs. The barrel rate is 10.8%, but the hard hit rate is only 33.5% while his average exit velocity is 87.7 mph. The dude still knows how to pitch.

Scherzer has struggled against lefties, as the HR/9 is 1.91 while the K-BB% is only 11.5%. He’s also been better on the road, posting a 3.71 FIP compared to 5.25 at home.

The Twins have struck out at the 17th-highest rate against right-handed pitching, while ranking 13th in ISO. Their wOBA ranks 19th as well.

As for the bullpens, Minnesota has the 15th-lowest FIP, while Toronto has the 20th-lowest since August 1st.

I like both pitchers in this one with runs coming at a premium.
