When the Dallas Wings selected Paige Bueckers with the first overall pick in the WNBA Draft, they surely didn’t expect it to be a one-year process after finishing 9-31 last season. However, to get off to a 1-10 start has to be considered a disappointment.
Bueckers, on the other hand, has been as good as advertised. She’s appeared in seven of the Wings’ 11 games this season while dealing with a concussion and subsequent illness, averaging 17.6 points, 4.7 rebounds, 6.3 assists, and 2.9 combined steals/blocks per game on 49-46-81 shooting splits. If Dallas wants any chance of upsetting the Las Vegas Aces tonight, it’ll need everything from Bueckers and more.

Bueckers is one of the most well-rounded players in the WNBA, as one of just seven players in the league who’s averaging at least 15 points, four rebounds, and four assists per game. She’s recorded 30 or more combined P/R/A three times, including twice in her last three games, and her 35-point, six-rebound, four-assist masterpiece in her return from injury felt like a coming-out party. Dallas is already putting a lot of faith in its young star; she has accounted for 37.9% of the Wings’ assists while she has been on the floor, the eighth-highest rate among players who have played at least 100 minutes, and she also ranks among the league’s top 50 in usage rate.
Plus, the Aces’ defense has struggled this season in what has been a down year overall. Las Vegas is just 4-4 and has conceded the fifth-most points, most rebounds, and second-most assists per game, and the anchor of the Aces’ defense, two-time Defensive Player of the Year A’ja Wilson, can’t snuff out all the team’s woes. Most worryingly, Las Vegas has allowed the second-highest field goal percentage in the restricted area, from floater range, and from the midrange, and while Bueckers has an elite three-point stroke, the majority of her shots come from within the arc. She attempts the second-most midrange shots per game in the WNBA and is the sixth-most efficient of the 19 players who attempt at least two middies per game.
