Philadelphia Phillies vs. San Francisco Giants prediction, pick for Wednesday 4/16/25

Updated:

By: Dan Johnson

On Wednesday night, the San Francisco Giants and Philadelphia Phillies face off with the series tied at 1-1. Robbie Ray, undefeated so far this season, looks to stifle a Phillies offense that’s struggled against left-handed pitching. Meanwhile, Aaron Nola, still seeking his first win, will need to find his rhythm against a Giants lineup that’s firing on all cylinders, especially on the road. Below, I’ve got my preview, prediction, and best bet for this Wednesday night baseball game between the Phillies and the Giants.

Here’s how I’ll play it. I’ll be pumping out these predictions for individual games each round, with plenty of coverage here on DraftKings Network. Follow my handle @dansby_edits for more betting plays.

Phillies vs. Giants prediction, preview

Both teams have their sights set on gaining momentum, but it’s the Giants that stand poised to seize the opportunity. With an impressive 8-2 road record this season, San Francisco has thrived away from home. They bring Robbie Ray to the mound, a southpaw who’s posted a sparkling 2.93 ERA in his first three starts of 2025. But, as is often the case with Ray, there’s more to the story. His 6.06 xERA suggests his numbers could regress, and his control issues—15 walks in 15.1 innings—are worth monitoring. However, the Phillies’ offense has been inconsistent at best, and Ray will face a lineup that’s struggled against left-handed pitchers, currently ranking 19th in batting average against southpaws this season. The potential for Ray to stymie the Phillies’ left-handed heavy lineup is high, especially considering his 49% ground-ball rate this season.

Philadelphia counters with Aaron Nola, a once-dominant force now struggling to find his footing in 2025. Despite his pedigree, Nola has yet to secure a win, carrying a 5.51 ERA into this matchup. His command has been far from sharp, allowing 10 earned runs in 16.1 innings. Worse, the Phillies’ offense has shown signs of vulnerability—a .241 team batting average and 3.80 runs per game rank them in the bottom half of the league. Nola will need to dig deep to outduel Ray, but with the Giants ranking 4th in MLB for runs scored (85), they’re likely to press the struggling right-hander early and often.

The Giants’ offensive production has been led by Jung Hoo Lee, who boasts a team-high .333 batting average, and Wilmer Flores, who leads with six home runs and 21 RBIs. They’ll be tasked with taking advantage of Nola’s inconsistency, while San Francisco’s 3.26 team ERA, good for sixth in MLB, gives them a distinct edge on the mound. It’s a team built on balance, with stellar pitching and enough offensive firepower to overcome the Phillies’ deficiencies.

Giants vs. Phillies pick, best bet

Adding to the confidence in this play is a crucial betting insight: The Giants have covered the run line in 13 of their last 14 road games following a loss. The Phillies, on the other hand, have struggled as home favorites, failing to cover the run line in seven of their last eight games after a win. The momentum swings squarely in the Giants’ favor here, and I’m backing them to cover the +1.5 spread as they continue their impressive road form.

When it comes to the total, I won’t even call it a strong lean. For the first time ever, I’m including two best bets in one of these pieces. Why? The over has hit in six of the Giants’ last six games, and eight of the Phillies’ last nine games as favorites. Both teams have shown vulnerability on the mound, with Ray’s control issues and Nola’s inconsistency. This game has the potential to see some fireworks, but 8.0 runs is still a modest total given the offensive and pitching dynamics at play.

Best bet: San Francisco Giants (+124) at Phillies

Best bet: Giants vs. Phillies o8.0 total runs (-115)

A second best bet?! It’s a must-tail.
