‘Tis the season to talk about holiday movies, music and traditions

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and Desus Nice and Scottie Beam are here with the latest episode of the Bet! podcast has our intrepid hosts talking about some of their holiday hates, a discussion of the holiday box office and game of name that Christmas tune!

After taking about holiday travel (remember the 5 P’s of travel, y’all) as well as holiday lights and traditions, they find some Christmas cheer in the form their favorite holiday movies. Desus says his favorite is Gremlins, which Scottie says she’s never seen. Scottie, meanwhile, is going with the Queen Latifah classic, Last Holiday. She says that in addition to seeing Queen Latifah find love with LL Cool J, it makes you question your mortality and consider what you would do if you were told you only had days left to live.

Of course, for some people going to the movies on Christmas is a tradition. Desus is here for it, but what he is not here for is people who don’t know how to behave at the theater. Smuggling codfish or sizzling fajitas is not appropriate movie food! Of course, this Christmas you have holdovers like Wicked, Gladiator II and Moana 2 with Mufasa entering the fray on December 20. So what movie will rule the holiday box office? Scottie is giving the nod to Moana 2. She thinks people still like animated movies and kids — and their parents — flock to them in droves. Mufasa, on the other hand, though a prequel to Lion King may be a little too dark, Scottie thinks. Desus, on the other hand, is all about Mufasa, saying it will make over $62 million to not only top the holiday box office but to set a new record. Scottie is down for that bet! And the loser will have to make a New Year’s vision board and have to present it on the show. So stay tuned for that!

Getting back home for the holidays, after hearing about Desus’ sad $15 Charlie Brown Christmas Tree from the dollar store, Scottie says that due to her dog’s appetite for anything on the floor she can’t go with a real tree. And forget white or green, this year she says she might go with a black tree! She thinks the color might really make the lights POP and this might be her only chance to color outside the lines since she doesn’t have any kids.

And that brings us the bane of Scottie’s existence — Christmas music! Desus and Scottie play a game of Guess That Christmas Song, and let’s just say I’ll let you decide if it stuffed the stockings with care or instead a lump of coal was there.

  • Will Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You be #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart Christmas week?
  • Will the volume of airline passengers during Christmas week in 2024 , from December 22, 2024 to December 28, 2024, be greater than Christmas week passengers in 2023 (December 24, 2023 to December 30, 2023)?
  • Will the Celtics beat the 76ers on Christmas Day?
  • Will the Lakers beat the Warriors on Christmas Day?
