We are now entering Week 10 of the college football season, and we have arrived at the time of year when we start to pay close attention to the Heisman Trophy race. The names that have been bandied about this season include players such as Oregon quarterback Dillon Gabriel, who is the favorite to win the award at +260 at DraftKings Sportsbook, along with the likes of Colorado star Travis Hunter at +330, Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty at +400, and Miami quarterback Cam Ward at +270.
However, it seems we have forgotten about Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders, who sits at +4000. Sanders started last week’s game against Cincinnati going 15 of 15 through the air, setting a program record. He ultimately continued his aerial assault, finishing 25 of 30 for 323 yards en route to a 38-23 victory. After the game, Coach Prime discussed Shedeur’s performance with the media, saying, “He’s so darn good that we don’t give him the credit he deserves for some of the things he does.” A reporter mentioned to Prime that Shedeur started out 15 of 15, making program history, and he responds with, “Wow. You don’t even notice that kind of stuff because you’re so caught up in the game and coaching. You don’t even think about it. I remember him doing something like that once at Jackson, and he was phenomenal. But wow. Just wow. And they don’t even mention him for the Heisman?…Oh my bad, he’s my son.”
The last part of that quote sparked a discussion on Tuesday’s edition of GoJo and Golic, where Jessie Coffield asked the Golics if they agreed with Coach Prime or if Shedeur is where he should be in the current Heisman conversation.
Mike Golic Jr. believes Coach Prime has a point. As far as importance to his team, there are maybe one or two other quarterbacks who are even close to being in the conversation as far as most valuable to their team in the way that Shedeur is. Mike Golic Sr. argues that if we take Dillon Gabriel off Oregon, they are not as good. Take Cam Ward off Miami, they are not as good. And if you take Sheduer Sanders off Colorado, they are not as good. He emphasizes if you take any player who is contending for a major award off their team they will not be as good. GoJo pushes back a bit, saying that we have seen an Oregon team that does not have Gabriel still puts up numbers. However, in the case of Ward and Shedeur, their teams rely more on the quarterbacks.
Senior stands firm with his prior take but believes more people will discuss Shedeur in the Heisman conversation now that Colorado has entered the rankings and is playing better than we had expected. GoJo circles back to where he believes Deion has a point because quarterbacks like Cade Klubnik and Carson Beck are ahead of Shedeur in the Heisman odds. GoJo asked Senior if there was a game where either of those quarterbacks have played better than Shedeur. Senior agrees with GoJo, but expresses that those quarterbacks are ranked higher than Shedeur because of their team rankings. Further, with Colorado now being ranked for the first time this season, he believes that will be the catalyst for Shedeur being talked about more in the Heisman race.
GoJo shares that entering the college football season, our attention span gets wrapped up in storylines. When teams like Colorado, Clemson, and even his alma mater, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, suffer early losses, we push them to the side. Still, they are working their way back into the conversation, and people are talking about them again. As for Coach Prime’s comments, GoJo believes that regardless of whether he thinks Shedeur is not getting enough Heisman attention is irrelevant. Prime saying Shedeur is not getting the attention because he is his son feeds the media machine so much so we can expect programs like College Gameday to have a segment on why Shedeur should be in the Heisman conversation. If Colorado keeps winning and moving up in the rankings, there could be two Buffaloes in New York. Imagine the media cycle, then.
