For the city of Seattle, it is a good thing that Geno Smith ($5,500, 20.88 FPTs) didn’t write back when he was written off.
Smith has done an impressive job reviving his career in a Seattle Seahawks uniform. He added another notable performance this week completing 33 of his 44 pass attempts for 327 yards and a touchdown without turning the ball over.
It took some time for the stage to be set as the New England Patriots broke open the game with its first score. This occurred on a five-yard pass from Jacoby Brissett ($5,000, 10.56 FPTs) to Ja’Lynn Polk ($3,800, 9.20 FPTs). Brissett completed 15 of his 27 pass attempts in the game for 149 yards and a touchdown. This score gave the Patriots a 20-17 lead with 12:43 remaining in the fourth quarter. But was not enough to get the victory.
The Patriots did most of their damage in the rushing game. New England’s backfield ran for 185 total yards in the matchup, compared to just 46 rushing yards tallied by Seattle. Antonio Gibson ($4,800, 11.30 FPTs) led the team in rushing yards, toting 11 carries for 96 yards. Rhamondre Stevenson ($6,200, 17.00 FPTs) also added 21 carries for 81 yards and a touchdown.
Hunter Henry ($3,800, 21.90 FPTs) also had an impressive game. He led the Patriots with eight receptions on 12 targets and 109 yards receiving. No other pass-catcher tallied more than 12 receiving yards.
Seattle got their scoring started on a 56-yard touchdown from Geno Smith to DK Metcalf ($5,900, 31.90 FPTs). The two-time All-Pro led all receivers with ten receptions for 129 yards and a touchdown. The Seahawks also got tremendous production from Jaxon Smith-Njigba ($4,900, 26.70 FPTs), who caught 12 passes for 117 total yards.
With Kenneth Walker III missing the game due to an abdominal injury, the Seahawks struggled to get much going on the ground. Zach Charbonnet ($5,800, 17.90 FPTs) recorded 14 carries for just 38 yards while adding five receptions for 31 yards.
The Seahawks officially tied the game up on a field goal from Jason Myers with just 55 seconds remaining. New England was unable to generate any offense after this field goal which ended up being the story in overtime as well.
The Patriots were given the first chance to score in overtime but were stifled by the Seattle defense. New England was unable to pick up a first down and punted the ball away. Geno Smith led the Seahawks on a 71-yard drive to set up Myers with a game winning field goal attempt. He converted it, and gave Seattle the 23-20 victory.
Seattle advanced to 2-0 on the season, but ended up pushing the game as the spread closed with the Seahawks as three-point favorites on DraftKings Sportsbook. The Patriots were unable to produce the +130 moneyline victory, but the over of 39 points cashed in the matchup. The Seahawks will look to continue their success next week against the Miami Dolphins.
While they did not have lofty expectations entering the season, the Patriots do not have a great outlook from here. They will travel to face the Jets and 49ers in the next two games before returning home to play the Dolphins, Texans, Jaguars, and Jets again as they search for their first win of the season.
