Is Brandon Aiyuk worth a stash in deeper fantasy football formats?

The San Francisco 49ers have continued to deal with multiple injuries this season, but Brandon Aiyuk hasn’t been part of their plans. It’s a unique situation, but recent developments indicate that Aiyuk is trying to make a comeback to the NFL. What could that look like, and should you consider the talented receiver as a fantasy football stash in deep leagues?

Let’s answer a couple of key questions based on the latest updates about Aiyuk’s situation and what his fantasy football outlook could be for the rest of the season.

What is Brandon Aiyuk’s status?

The 49ers placed Aiyuk on the Reserve/Left Squad list after he stopped reporting to the team while he was rehabbing from a severe right-knee injury suffered in October of 2024 that involved his ACL, MCL, and meniscus. The team had previously voided approximately $27 million in 2026 contract guarantees in July 2025 after Aiyuk failed to fulfill required rehabilitation sessions and team check-ins.

On Wednesday, though, Aiyuk filed to be reinstated after hiring Drew Rosenhaus as his new agent.

Aiyuk signed a four-year extension with the 49ers that was worth around $120 million in August of 2024, but the contract standoff could have been the origin of some of the issues between him and the team.

What’s next for Aiyuk?

Schefter reports that Aiyuk will be reporting to the team facility on Friday. However, coach Kyle Shanahan and GM John Lynch have both said that Aiyuk is not part of the team’s plans. Lynch even said, “I think it’s safe to say he’s played his last snap with the 49ers.” Even after multiple receiver injuries, coach Kyle Shanahan said simply, “no” when he was asked if he would reconsider a reunion with Aiyuk in September.

If the team does not want to keep him, that leaves the team two options before Aiyuk shows up — they can cut him, or they can trade him. He hasn’t drawn attention on the market in past attempts to move him via trade, so it looks most likely that they will cut him and deal with the financial ramifications of the dead cap money. By filing for reinstatement, Aiyuk forces the 49ers to address his status rather than leaving him on the reserve/left squad list, where he isn’t being paid and doesn’t occupy a roster spot.

If the 49ers do cut him, Aiyuk would become a free agent and could sign with a new team right away.

Aiyuk also has an outstanding arrest warrant stemming from an alleged misdemeanor exhibition-of-speed incident in December 2025. Although the NFL could review the situation under its personal conduct policy, there has been no public indication that league discipline is forthcoming.

Does Aiyuk have fantasy football potential?

“Brandon is healthy and ready to get back on the field,” according to his agent Drew Rosenhaus. With many receiver-needy teams, he could be an intriguing option for deep leagues depending on where he lands.

Aiyuk definitely had enough NFL-level talent to be a strong fantasy contributor before his injury. He was a first-round pick in 2020 out of Arizona State and had two seasons with over 100 targets and 1,000 receiving yards in 2022 and 2023, totaling 15 touchdowns in those two years.

There’s significant risk in adding Aiyuk since he hasn’t played since October of 2024, and his current shape and ability are unknown. There is definite upside, but it could be a big swing-and-a-miss as well.

Aiyuk previously stated on social media that he wanted to play with the Commanders due to his relationship with QB Jayden Daniels, but ESPN’s Dan Graziano reported that the team was not expected to be in the market for Aiyuk even if he becomes a free agent.

Other receiver-needy teams that have been speculatively mentioned as potential destinations include the Chiefs, Steelers, and Browns, but his market is totally unknown at this point.

The Bottom Line: Brandon Aiyuk can be a deep league speculative stash

Aiyuk is a huge wild card in deep leagues. He brings the potential to make a significant impact if he’s healthy and lands in a good spot, but the complicated process still has several steps before reaching that point. If you are in a 12-team league or larger and have an available roster spot, it is worth grabbing and stashing him, since there should be increased clarity on his potential return over the next several days.
