All good things must eventually come to an end. Well, one of the best to ever do it in American women’s soccer, Alex Morgan, has officially announced her retirement. The 35-year-old shared a heartwarming video via X on Thursday, September 8th to confirm the news:
Morgan also revealed she is pregnant with her second child, and will play in her final game with the San Diego Wave on Sunday, September 8th against the North Carolina Courage.
Morgan first debuted for the USWNT in 2010, and quickly ascended to a starting and pivotal role as a striker next to Abby Wambach, helping the U.S. finish second at the 2011 World Cup and claim gold at the London Olympics in 2012. After scoring her first goal against Chine PR in 2010, she hit the back of the net against 32 countries and ranks 5th all-time in USWNT in goals + assists with 176—only following legends Mia Hamm, Wambach, Kristine Lilly, and Carli Lloyd.
Appearing in a total of 22 World Cup matches and 16 Olympic matches, Morgan’s incredible speed, ball control, finesse and striking ability cements her on the Mount Rushmore of USWNT forwards.
Morgan explains how success is defined to her as “never giving up” and “giving her all” on the field, but also in pushing for the global investment of women’s sports and being an inspiration for the next generation of women soccer players worldwide.
Career Achievements
Morgan has paved the way for young athletes everywhere, being a staple the USWNT world dominance. Amongst her many, many accolades
includes two World-Cup Championships, an Olympic gold medal, and five SheBelieve Cup victories.
As for achievements, Morgan has climbed her way up the USWNT record books in multiple categories:
- 4th-Most USWNT World Cup Goals (9)
- 5th-Most All-Time Career Goals (123)
- 3rd-Most Olympic Goals (6)
- 9th-Most USWNT Cap (223)
She also earned two U.S. Soccer Female Player of the Year awards in 2012 and 2018.
The player who famously sipped tea after scoring the game-winning goal against England in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup, is now officially hanging up her cleats. However, when one star striker leaves the field, it paves way for young firecrackers such as Trinity Rodman, Sophia Smith, and Mallory Swanson, who have already made a name for themselves in the soccer world.
