The New York Yankees announced on Wednesday that starter Luis Gil will be placed on the 15-day IL after suffering a lower back strain.
Gil exited his start on Tuesday in the fourth inning due to tightness in his lower back. He struck out three batters, walked six, and allowed three earned runs while giving a home run before being forced to leave the game.
Gil has had a good season up until this point. He has a 12-6 record with a 3.39 ERA. His 12 wins are tied for third-most among starting pitchers in the MLB this season. Gil has totaled 144 strikeouts, which is the 22nd-most among active pitchers. Gil has also started 24 games for the Yankees in his first full season on an MLB roster.
The Yankees recalled RHP Will Warren from their Triple-A affiliate Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to replace Gil on the team’s active roster.
Yankees Manager Aaron Boone stated that Gil’s injury is minor and he should not miss an extended period of time. Boone is hoping Gil can return towards the end his 15-day IL period.
