MLB trade tracker: Latest moves ahead of deadline on August 1

MLB’s silly season is officially upon us. The 2023 trade deadline is set for 6 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 1 — less than one week away — and there’s no telling how much chaos might go down between now and then. For starters, the best player in the league might be on the move: The Los Angeles Angels get less likely to deal Shohei Ohtani with every win, but there’s at least a chance that baseball’s unicorn finds himself on a new team for the stretch run.

But Ohtani’s name isn’t the only one that figures to be bandied about in the coming days. This deadline season has a little bit of everything, from All-Star arms — Lucas Giolito of the Chicago White Sox, Marcus Stroman of the Chicago Cubs — to productive hitters like Chicago’s Cody Bellinger and Washington’s Jeimer Candelario. And with seemingly every team still at least on the fringes of Wild Card contention, the trade possibilities are endless.

Cubs acquire Jeimer Candelario from Nationals

From potential sellers to aggressive buyers, Chicago landed arguably the best position player available — and a former Cubs prospect — in Candelario as they look to build on their recent hot streak.

Brewers acquire Mark Canha from Mets

A 34-year-old pending free agent, Canha was among the likeliest players to get caught up in New York’s deadline sell-off, while Milwaukee adds a much-needed bat in its outfield.

Diamondbacks acquire Paul Sewald from Mariners

The D-backs’ bullpen has melted down in July, and Sewald should provide instant stability in the ninth inning in both 2023 and 2024. In return, three bats are headed back to a Seattle team that could really use more position player depth.

Rays acquire Aaron Civale from Guardians

Tampa was in desperate need of an another arm in its injury-ravaged rotation, while Cleveland has young arms coming out of its ears and was able to land a prospect in Kyle Manzardo who could jumpstart their pedestrian offense.

July 30

Angels acquire Randal Grichuk and C.J. Cron from Rockies

Look, if you’re all in, you might as well be all in. The Angels have committed to contending one last time with Shohei Ohtani, and they’re making the most of it, adding C.J. Cron and Randal Grichuk to a position player group that’s been ravaged by injury of late.

Braves acquire Nicky Lopez from Royals

Atlanta doesn’t have a ton of needs, but Lopez provides speed and defensive versatility — two things that will come in awfully handy for a team with its eyes on a deep October run.

Texas Rangers acquire Jordan Montgomery from Cardinals

It’s time for every pending Cardinals free agent to go, as the Rangers got another starter to replace the injured Jacob deGrom and Nathan Eovaldi while St. Louis continues to retool its rotation with an eye on 2024 and beyond.

Blue Jays acquire Jordan Hicks from Cardinals

Just a day after All-Star closer Jordan Romano landed on the IL, Toronto gave its bullpen a much-needed lift with the flamethrowing Hicks, who’s been serving capably as the Cardinals’ closer since Ryan Helsley went down with an arm injury in June. Minor League pitchers Sem Robberse and Adam Kloffenstein are headed to St. Louis.

Rangers acquire Max Scherzer from Mets

After a negotiating saga that played out in real time over several hours and had more twists and turns than a roller coaster, Scherzer finally agreed to waive his no-trade clause and accept a trade to Texas. He’s exactly the rotation depth the Rangers need, while the Mets get some salary relief in addition to a legitimate top prospect in infielder Luisangel Acuna (yes, Ronald’s little brother).

July 28

Astros acquire Kendall Graveman from White Sox

Houston is bolstering its bullpen depth ahead of the deadline as Chicago’s fire sale continues apace. Kendall Graveman, who’s posted a 3.48 ERA this year as the White Sox fill-in closer while Liam Hendriks has been out, is headed to the Astros for the second time in three years. Catching prospect Korey Lee, a former first-round pick back in 2019, heads to Chicago.

Dodgers acquire Lance Lynn and Joe Kelly from White Sox

Pitching was the Dodgers’ No. 1 need heading into deadline season, especially after shipping Noah Syndergaard to Cleveland, and L.A. took its first step to addressing it on Friday afternoon. Lance Lynn has struggled mightily this season, but his strikeout stuff remains, and the Dodgers are hoping a change of scenery fixes what ails the big righty. Former Dodger reliever Joe Kelly also heads west, while right-handed pitching prospect Nick Nastrini headlines the return for Chicago.

July 27

Marlins acquire David Robertson from Mets

Well, after weeks of speculation, it’s finally happened: the Mets have made themselves the most expensive sellers in baseball history. New York dealt arguably their top available trade chip late Thursday night, sending closer David Robertson to division rival Miami for prospects Marco Vargas and Ronald Hernandez. While this is obviously a profoundly disappointing development for the Mets, Billy Eppler and Co. actually secured a pretty good return here. The Marlins meanwhile, continue to bolster a bullpen that ranks just 16th in the Majors in ERA this year — and has seen closer A.J. Puk falter of late.

Brewers acquire Carlos Santana from Pirates

Milwaukee is adding the infielder in a deal with Pittsburgh before the deadline, which is next Tuesday, August 1. Santana has bounced around quite a bit since 2018, when he left the Guardians to sign with the Phillies. Since then, Santana has played for four teams, including a second stint with Cleveland. Santana still has a bit of pop with 12 HRs and 53 RBI for the Pirates so far this season.

July 26

Dodgers acquire Amed Rosario from Guardians

The Guardians are sending SS Amed Rosario to Los Angeles, pending a physical. This could mean Mookie Betts goes back to the outfield if the Dodgers want Miguel Rojas and Rosario up the middle in the infield. Otherwise, it’s another strong contact hitter for the order. Noah Syndergaard is going back to Cleveland as part of the deal.

Marlins acquire RP Jorge Lopez from Twins

The Miami Marlins are sending RP Dylan Floro to the Twins in exchange for Lopez, who was acquired from the Orioles before the deadline last season. So it’s just a relief pitcher swap in this deal. Nothing major.

July 25

Dodgers acquire UTIL Kiké Hernández

This certainly won’t be the last move the Los Angeles Dodgers make before the deadline, but with needs at both middle infield spots (and for a right-handed bat in their lefty-heavy outfield) L.A. has turned to an old friend: Boston Red Sox utility man Kiké Hernández, who called Dodger Stadium home for six years from 2015 to 2020.

Miami Marlins acquire LHP Jose Castillo

Miami added some bullpen depth on Tuesday, acquiring the 27-year-old lefty Castillo from the San Diego Padres.

Atlanta Braves acquire LHP Taylor Hearn, RHP Pierce Johnson

Bullpen depth is just about the only potential exhaust port in the Death Star that is the 2023 Braves, and GM Alex Anthopoulos has wasted no time addressing it. Atlanta swung a deal for former Colorado Rockies closer Pierce Johnson, then acquired lefty Taylor Hearn from the Texas Rangers for cash considerations.

July 19

Baltimore Orioles acquire RHP Shintaro Fujinami

Nearly two weeks out from the deadline, we have our first action: The O’s have reached a deal with the Oakland A’s for hard-throwing (and occasionally erratic) reliever Shintaro Fujinami.
