Chris Godwin Start or Sit Advice for Week 5

It’s been a down year for the Buccaneers and Chris Godwin’s ($7,200 for Showdown) numbers haven’t been exciting. The veteran has yet to crack double-digit FPTS and is the No. 57 receiver for fantasy football. Godwin is on the field a ton, running a route on 81.2% of his team’s dropbacks, but he is only seeing a 14.3% target share.

Godwin, however, did show some signs of life this past Sunday vs. the Packers with Jalon Daniels ($8,600) starting at quarterback for the injured Baker Mayfield (thumb).

Godwin caught six of his seven targets – both of which set season highs – for 31 yards. Godwin led Tampa Bay with a 25.9% target share, which also easily set a season best. The wideout’s 2.3 aDOT was very low, but that wasn’t surprising to see in Daniels’ first career start. Godwin leading the way in targets was encouraging nonetheless.

Daniels will start again this Thursday vs. the Cowboys, so the rookie continuing to rely on Godwin is very realistic. Dallas is also an elite matchup. The Cowboys are allowing the highest pass success rate in the league and are giving up the second-most yards per pass this season (8.3). Dallas ranks eighth in pace and every game the club has played has generated at least 57 points.

53.5% of Godwin’s routes this season have come from the slot. The Cowboys are yielding the fourth-most yards (405) and fourth-most touchdowns (three) to players who line up in the slot. This is arguably the best possible matchup for Godwin, and while his low aDOT hurts his upside, he should rack up plenty of catches in this spot to provide double-digit FPTS for full-PPR formats. For half-point and standard leagues, Godwin has less appeal, but is still viable given the incredible matchup.
