Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockies prediction, pick for Friday 8/21/26

The AL Central might well be the most wide-open division in baseball. In every other division, between zero and two teams are within five games of the leader. In the AL Central, three teams trail the Chicago White Sox by fewer than five games, opening a conceivable path for any of them to end up winning it.

The Cleveland Guardians, who have claimed the division title three of the last four seasons, should have a chance to make up ground this weekend with a three-game series against the NL cellar-dwelling Colorado Rockies. The opener is set to begin tonight at 8:40 p.m. ET.

Cleveland will send Joey Cantillo to the mound for tonight’s contest, and the Rockies will turn to Tanner Gordon.

Let’s break down this inter-league battle with some odds and lines at DraftKings Sportsbook.

Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockies Best Bets

  • Over 10.5 (-112): I’m not usually all that confident in the Guardians’ ability to string together runs, but given Gordon’s bottom-decile hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity and 7.82 ERA at home, it’s hard to imagine him not getting shelled.
  • Ángel Genao 2+ Total Bases (-106): The 22-year-old has been on fire in both the minors and the majors, and his average exit velocity would rank in the league’s top decile if he’d accrued enough plate appearances to qualify.

Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockies prediction, preview

For the Guardians, the division was right there for the taking at the All-Star break, when they were five games over .500 and, per FanGraphs, had roughly a 40% chance of ultimately winning it. However, Cleveland has floundered since then, going just 11-20 since the All-Star break and, critically, losing a series against the White Sox. The Guardians’ offense has been miserable all season, as they rank dead last in OPS overall and 10th-to-last since the Midsummer Classic, and while rookie Ángel Genao and trade deadline acquisition Jo Adell have helped somewhat, they’ll still need more from Steven Kwan, José Ramírez, and Travis Bazzana, all of whom have been cold. Cleveland’s poor offense has put pressure on its pitching staff to be elite, and although it’s certainly been solid (with the sixth-best rotation ERA and the 11th-best bullpen), that hasn’t been enough to translate into consistent wins. Trade deadline acquisition Foster Griffin has also struggled in his first three starts with the team, as has reliever Craig Yoho. Ramírez aside, the Guardians are still a young squad capable of being better in 2027, but their playoff hopes for 2026 are fading fast unless they can sweep Colorado.

This has been an encouraging campaign for the Rockies, all things considered. They’ll still certainly miss the playoffs, and they may finish with more than 100 losses for the fourth consecutive season, but even a 100-loss season would represent significant progress relative to 2025. In fact, Colorado has a winning record in inter-league games. The Rockies have been buoyed by their offense, which was the league’s fifth-best before the All-Star break and has been its 13th-best since. Colorado is currently without its best hitter, Hunter Goodman, but rookies TJ Rumfield and Cole Carrigg have gotten their careers off to spectacular starts, and former first overall pick Mickey Moniak has produced his finest season at the plate. The Rockies have still had by far the worst rotation ERA in baseball (6.13), and their bullpen has been only scantly better, but Tomoyuki Sugano has been respectable and DFA-ing Michael Lorenzen qualifies as addition by subtraction. They downgraded their bullpen at the deadline by trading starter-turned-reliever Antonio Senzatela, but Brennan Bernardino and Jordan Romano have proven to be strong free agency signings.

Cantillo has flown a bit under the radar this season even in Cleveland, as Parker Messick could be a Cy Young Award contender and Gavin Williams leads the American League in strikeouts, but he’s still been rather reliable, pitching to a 3.80 ERA in an AL-leading 26 starts. While he’s prone to the occasional blow-up, he’s been solid more often than not, giving up two or fewer earned runs on 18 separate occasions. Advanced numbers back up his basic statistical profile; he has a solid 58th-percentile expected ERA and a 66th-percentile expected batting average. Cantillo is prone to issuing free passes, sporting a 20th-percentile walk rate, but Colorado ranks fourth-to-last in walks this season. However, he’s been exceptional at generating whiffs and strikeouts, and the Rockies find air frequently. Additionally, while he ranks in just the 42nd percentile in hard-hit rate, he’s been good at forcing grounders, a critical asset against a team that’s been good at getting the ball in the air, especially at high-altitude Coors Field. Colorado, unsurprisingly, has been significantly better at home, sporting the league’s third-highest home OPS, and Cantillo has been slightly worse on the road, but he has the tools to succeed regardless. This will be his first career outing against the Rockies.

Gordon, meanwhile, has split his time between a starting and long relief role, but given that he’s thrown at least four innings in 11 of his 17 appearances and will be on five days’ rest, he should be able to offer a relatively normal starter’s load. The 26-year-old hasn’t been great overall this season, pitching to a 5.55 ERA in 71.1 innings, but across his last six appearances, that mark has dropped to 3.12. Advanced numbers suggest that he’s gotten unlucky to have posted the ERA that he has, although his 4.85 xERA is still just an 18th-percentile mark. To be fair, Gordon’s lone strength, his 99th-percentile walk rate, should be an asset against the Guardians, who have been excellent at drawing free passes. However, he also ranks in the bottom decile in ground ball rate, hard-hit rate, barrel rate, and average exit velocity, and even though Cleveland ranks in the bottom six in all three power categories, that’s never a good recipe at Coors Field. Gordon has logged a pitiful 7.82 ERA in 38.0 innings at home, though he could have a respite against the Guardians, who have had the league’s second-worst road offense. Gordon got shelled in his one career appearance against Cleveland, allowing seven runs (six earned) in three innings of work.

Cleveland Guardians at Colorado Rockiese pick, best bet

Best Bet: Over 10.5 (-112)

I’m a little bit hesitant overall banking on this Guardians offense to put up runs, but I’m not all that high on Cantillo, especially since Colorado still tends to hit the ball well at home. Even Cleveland should be able to get to Gordon at home.

Strong Lean: Ángel Genao 2+ Total Bases (-106)

Genao has had a tremendous start to his career, recording two or more total bases in four of his last seven games, and he has followed up his .949 OPS in Triple-A in July with a 1.032 mark across two levels in August.
