Big Brother Season 28 Power Rankings After Episode 8

We got a major early game move in Big Brother Season 28 last week, as Devens in the Toolshed successfully backdoored Rome and sent him packing in Thursday’s live episode (read my recap here).

That’s a major blow for the other side of the house, but the week also showed some of the cracks in the foundation of the Toolshed alliance. Given the fact that Devens won both HOH and the veto comp, things got needlessly messy for the Toolshed, and especially the reality icon trio of Devens, Dee and Angela. The mistakes the Toolshed has been making have not hurt them yet, but could that change this week?

Following Rome’s eviction, here’s how every remaining houseguest stacks up after Week 2 of Big Brother Season 28, including who’s playing the strongest game, who’s rising and who’s in danger.

Kamu (+4)

I still think Drew is playing the best game in the house, but there is danger brewing for him within his own alliance. Angela is getting more and more paranoid about him and she is pulling Dee and Devens into her anti-Drew vortex. So while I have Drew at No. 1 in this week’s rankings, I have to say I was most impressed with Kamu’s game.

Kamu continues to build relationships in the house, and showed himself to have the ability to wield influence even when he is not necessarily in charge or even the top ally of the person in charge. Of the Red Corner alliance members in the Toolshed he is the strongest, which is why Drew was openly talking with Barrett about wanting to potentially take him out.

In addition to his surprisingly good social game, we’ve yet to see Kamu have a real chance to show his chops from a physical perspective. Let’s not forget Kamu reached the highest levels of MMA, competing in the UFC. Now, did he become a big star there? Clearly not. But at the very least, it indicates that he was in the top 1% of those in the fight game.

I may not always like what Kamu has to say in the house, but I can’t deny he’s played a stellar game thus far.

Lyric (+4)

She may have lost her beau in Rome, but overall it actually wasn’t a bad week for Lyric despite initially being on the block.

I think we have to give Lyric, and to some degree Rome, credit for finding a way to convince Devens to take Lyric off the block despite how much more difficult it made his game. Lyric went on full campaign mode in the house, not only working Devens, but working everyone else as well attempting to sell a fake breakup. Now did most people believe that story? No, but some (looking at you, Yash and Chuk) did and enough didn’t seem to care enough to punish her for it. She came to play this week in a way not many predicted she had in her in the preseason.

I also think it will be very interesting to watch her without Rome in the house. Sure, she obviously would rather get her Rome cuddles, apparently, but there’s no doubt that at times he distracted her from the game. He also, as a result of their showmance, put a target on her back. She likely wouldn’t have even been on the block last week were it not for Rome. So now with Rome gone, it allows Lyric to move a little differently in the house and to really play her own game, uninhibited by anyone else’s.

It could turn out that her bid to get off the block will be the highlight of her season, but now it feels like there are more possibilities for what Lyric and her game could look like in the game for the rest of the season.

Haley (+8)

Listen, I still don’t think Haley is going to win up winning this season of Big Brother. But, like with Kamu, I have to give credit where credit is due. In a week where lots of people fell, she actually made significant strides to improve her standing in the game.

Unlike her Red Corner ally Chuk, Haley is actively working to expand her base in the house, making real progress on her relationship with Angela. In fact, she might have even gained some leverage there as Dee and Angela openly talked about their issues with Drew in front of Haley, which could turn out to be a mistake. I also think in a strange way, Rome coming at Haley actually helped her in that it made her more sympathetic for houseguests who previously may have agreed with his criticism of her, but would not have come at her in the aggressive way that Rome did.

Haley remains in a good place with Kamu, which is a relationship which could pay off significantly for her, and if she can continue to work her way into the good graces of Angela (and by transitive property Dee), things could suddenly look pretty good for Haley.

It felt after last week that Haley wasn’t going to be long for the Big Brother house, but now she could be setting herself up for a decent run at the very least.

Biggest Fallers

Dee (-5)

Last week, I had Dee at No. 1. I thought, despite some sloppy play, that she had a pretty successful HOH. This week, she continued down the wrong path, making more mistakes that led me to question her game a little bit more.

Notably, as I noted above, she is allowing herself to get sucked into Angela’s paranoia vortex when it comes to Drew. I don’t get this at all, as Drew has done nothing but provide information and stay loyal to the Crossovers. Yet, just about every time Dee and Angela get together alone it’s basically a guarantee that they’re going to badmouth Drew. It didn’t necessarily hurt them, per se, this week. However, he may be finally catching on that he might be best served taking his talents and loyalty elsewhere, and that could spell trouble for Dee and Angela. Especially if they lose their hold on Haley, and she shares all the duo’s paranoid misgivings about Drew with him down the line.

Dee was also a major part of convincing Devens to take Lyric off the block as opposed to Melody. Now, it really didn’t hurt the alliance, as they still were able to get Rome out of the house, but from a game perspective it made the week far messier than necessary. Again, Dee became somewhat obsessed with sending a message to Drew through Melody, and it feels at some point one of these game mistakes is going to come back and bite Dee and her allies in the behind.

Barrett (-3)

It was a bit of a sophomore slump for Barrett this week, as after a strong Week 1, his position in the game seemed to deteriorate pretty quickly.

Barrett was a havenot this week, and I have to wonder if the lack of food and cold showers affected his game. Barrett kind of just existed in the house this week, not really making many moves and not really being part of much of the action. His flirtmance with Dee also fizzled and based on when he was brought up to the HOH room for the now infamous 4:30 a.m. meeting, it appears as though he is at the very bottom of the totem pole with the Toolshed.

It feels like as he falls in the Toolshed hierarchy, he doesn’t have great options elsewhere in the house. Now, he did form a Final 2 with Drew, which has potential. and he certainly could build something with Mallory. But, I’m certainly not feeling as good about Barrett’s game now as I was a week ago, nor do I think Barrett is playing as good a game as Drew. But the potential is there for a rebound.

Chuk (-1)

Technically this should be Melody here, and I don’t think she had a good week either, but I want to talk about Chuk.

In a week where the other two members of his Red Corner alliance made major strides, Chuk went the other way. I went from thinking Haley was going to drag Chuk down, to feeling the exact opposite this week. As far as I can tell, Chuk is basically cool just letting it ride with the Red Corner and the Toolshed. I haven’t seen him make any meaningful game moves outside, or even within, his alliance. He also seems to have limited influence anywhere in the house.

On top of that, I have to question his game instincts after he allowed himself to be fooled and used by Lyric. Almost no one bought into her fake breakup with Rome … except Chuk and Yash. Now, Yash falling for it doesn’t surprise me. But I had higher hopes for Chuk. I mean look at his face when he finds out Lyric was playing him.

The fact he bit so hard on such a clearly fake breakup makes me concerned for the rest of Chuk’s game. He needs to step up big this week and make an impact. Otherwise, he is in danger of giving floater vibes.
