Friday morning, the final episode of Dexter: Resurrection, “And Justice for All…” aired on Paramount+. This was the 10th and final episode of the next chapter in the Dexter universe. Although Dexter: Resurrection hasn’t officially been renewed for a second season, Variety reported in August that Paramount is planning to open a writers’ room for another season in the near future.
The 10th episode of Dexter: Resurrection is also airing live on Showtime on Sunday, September 7, at 8:00 p.m. ET if you haven’t yet watched the season finale. A reminder that there will be spoilers down below.
1. Dexter has finally accepted who he is
The closing scene of Dexter: Resurrection was a perfect moment, fitting with a callback to his past. The more things change, the more things stay the same. Dexter’s original ritual to get rid of a body was to go on his boat “Slice of Life” in Miami, Florida, and disperse it. But instead of being in sunny Florida and on his boat, he was on Billinoaire Leon Prater’s boat in New York City.
To end the episode and season, Dexter had one of the impactful quotes of the show. “I used to wish that I could be different, normal. A life without my dark passenger. But who am I kidding? This is who I am, what I am. I’m Dexter Morgan. Exactly who I need to be, exactly who you want me to be.”
Throughout the nine total seasons (including Dexter: New Blood), featuring Dexter as his current self, he has consistently struggled to balance both aspects of his life. But finally, after nearly 20 years, Dexter has found peace with who he truly is.
2. Dexter’s relationship with Harrison is the best it’s ever been
After Dexter left at the end of the final episode of the original series, his relationship with his son, Harrison, has been a rocky one. Dexter reconnected with Harrison in Dexter: New Blood in Iron Lake, New York. Throughout that season, it took Dexter a while to regain Harrison’s trust, but in the end, he did. But that didn’t last since Harrison thought his father was dead after shooting him.
Once again, slowly but surely, Dexter and Harrison became close and ended Dexter: Resurrection as close as they’ve ever been. Dexter realized later in this season that Harrison is the only person he has left that he can fully trust. With that said, Harrison helped Dexter in the end to get out of Prater’s serial killer room.
3. Will the NYPD connect Angel Batista
and Leon Prater’s death to Dexter?
In episode nine of Dexter: Resurrection, “Touched by an Angel”, Leon Prater shot and killed Angel Batista to stop him from choking Dexter. Dexter’s last original friend from Miami, Batista, is gone, and forced Dexter to turn his attention to Prater. Once Dexter escaped Prater’s penthouse with his body, along with his trophies among other things, the NYPD raided Prater’s room full of serial killer collectables.
The season ended with Dexter seemingly clear of any connection to Batista and Prater. But as the NYPD dives deeper into both cases, will they eventually link Dexter to them? A common thread from the entire Dexter series is that his past ultimately catches up to him at some point.
This season, Prater was the perfect villain to challenge Dexter, but it was inevitable what would happen to him once he tried to hurt his son, Harrison. Seeing Dexter interact with multiple other serial killers in Prater’s group was entertaining and made for excellent television, especially given its setting in a major city like New York.
