One of the most popular TV franchises, Dexter, returns this Friday, July 11, on Paramount+. This season is part of a new series titled “Dexter Resurrection”. The season will feature 10 episodes, with two releasing on Friday.
The original series of Dexter ran for eight seasons from 2006 to 2013. Then, after eight years away, Dexter returned in “Dexter New Blood” in 2021. The latest chapter in the franchise, “Dexter Original Sin,” aired in 2024, detailing Dexter’s childhood and how he became a serial killer.
Here are five questions I’m looking forward to seeing answered in Dexter Resurrection.
1. How did Dexter survive?
The number one question on everyone’s mind since New Blood has been Is Dexter alive? After his son, Harrison, shot him at the end of the final episode of Dexter New Blood, Dexter was seen bleeding out on the snowy ground. At the beginning of Original Sin, they showed Dexter in the back of an ambulance and waking up in the hospital.
Even though they already showed everyone that he is alive and in the hospital, the rest of the story of what happened from when he was shot to getting in the ambulance. Also, how long has he been in the hospital before his eventual move to New York City? There are a number of questions left to be answered, but I am confident they will do a good job of filling the audience in, as they have ensured every detail counts from the show’s beginning.
2. What is Dexter’s current relationship with Harrison?
Dexter and Harrison reconnected in New Blood and grew close throughout the season, but that ended once his son knew the truth about him. With Dexter surviving Harrison’s kill attempt, where does that leave their relationship? Chief Angela Bishop told Harrison to get away after he shot his father, and it is unknown where he is currently.
Even though Dexter instructed his son to shoot him, can he forgive Harrison? It is an interesting situation because Dexter and Harrison’s relationship has been rocky from the start, and this is another hurdle they need to overcome. Will Dexter and Harrison eventually mend the fences? Most likely yes, but how will they get to that point?
3. Will Dexter’s past finally catch up to him?
Angel Batista appeared at the end of Dexter New Blood and has grown suspicious about his old friend. In the trailer, Batista has been featured for this new season. Throughout New Blood, Dexter went by the alias “Jim Lindsay and was living an everyday life until his son found him. With Jim Lindsay in the past, how will he handle going by Dexter Morgan once again after faking his death?
Dexter has successfully done a great job in the past of keeping anyone from getting close enough to realize who he is. But New Blood showed that this older version of Dexter isn’t the same killer as we saw in the original eight seasons. Dexter has done a great job over the years of getting out of tricky situations.
In the trailer for Resurrection, Dexter’s father, Harry, tells him to be careful, to which he responds, “I’m tired of being careful”. This is interesting because it isn’t the way Dexter would have acted in the past, and Batista appears worried about the path he is taking.
4. Is Dexter working with a new team?
There were a few new characters featured in the trailer of Resurrection, including Peter Dinklage (Leon Prater), Uma Thurman (Charley), Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine (Blessing Kamara), Kadia Saraf (Detective Claudette Wallace), Dominic Fumusa (Detective Melvin Oliva), and Emilia Suárez (Elsa Rivera). In the trailer, it seems like Leon Prater is the leader of a group of misfits.
Dexter has spent time in Florida and Massachusetts and will now move to New York City. Each time Dexter has been in a city, he has developed new relationships and friendships, but what will that look like in the Big Apple? Dexter has always done his best to try to fit in wherever he is, so no one is suspicious of him.
5. Will Dexter Resurrection be a one-off season?
In an interview with Vanity Fair, Michael C. Hall and the showrunner for Dexter, Clyde Phillips, seemed confident this could be the beginning of a multi-season series. “The thinking is not to come back for a sort of self-contained one-off again, but leave it open to further exploration. The intention, and hope, is that the story will continue beyond this.”
Dexter has been one of the most beloved shows on TV for the last 19 years and seems to be only getting bigger. With Harrison’s emergence in Dexter New Blood, it has added a ton of stories left to be told.
