Hunter Greene, Cincinnati Reds at Atlanta Braves ($8,200) — The 2017 No. 2 Pick Overall is coming off his first All-Star appearance. His strikeout numbers are down this season (10.3 K/9) but so are the home runs allowed (0.82 HR/9). He’s keeping the ball in the park and his ERA is benefiting (3.34). His ERA also benefits from getting out of Cincinnati (2.53 Away ERA vs. 3.94 Home ERA). He is the exact same pitcher in every splits metric except one — HR/9. The difference is the park. The Braves are still living on brand name. This is not the same World Championship team,
Value
Tobias Myers, Milwaukee Brewers at Chicago Cubs ($7,200) — Milwaukee makes beer and pitchers — and pitchers of beer. Myers is their latest positive project. Myers spent time with five organizations and toiled in the Brewers’ Minor League system before it clicked a month ago. Myers became a starter on May 26 and has since posted a 5-1 record with a 2.50 ERA (3.91 xFIP), 7.2 K/9 and 0.67 HR/9. He was terrific in his last start before the break — eight scoreless innings and six strikeouts vs. Pittsburgh. His two prior starts weren’t great but they weren’t bad, either. Myers allowed early runs at Colorado before settling down. Against the Cubs, two of the three runs allowed came on a first-inning two-run homer.
INFIELD
Stud
Rafael Devers, Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies ($6,300) — After a hot run into the All-Star Break (five hits and two home runs during the Royals series), Devers has come out cold (one hit during the Dodgers series). Colorado may not seem like the hottest place on the Earth but the thin air warms bats. Devers has not been great against left-handed pitching. This will scare away some. This is a mistake. How many times will he face SP Austin Gomber ($5,000)? How many times will he face right-handed arms from the bullpen?
Jose Altuve, Houston Astros at Oakland Athletics ($5,400) — The Astros draw one of the better matchups on the slate. SP Hogan Harris ($5,300) has a 5.23 xFIP and is backed by a below-average bullpen. Altuve is riding a six-game hit streak. After a cool May, Altuve and the Astros snapped out of it. His batting average has been north of .300 in every month except May.
Value
Ceddanne Rafaela, Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies ($4,600) — The cut-off line for value is typically $4,400. Exceptions can be made for Coors Field. This is a bargain and makes the Red Sox stack work. Rafela hits at the bottom of the order. That might be fewer at-bats but Boston is guaranteed a ninth-inning frame. The benefit of batting ninth is that Rafela enables a wrap-around stack. He also has SS/OF eligibility. Last but not least, it’s starting to click for Boston’s No. 3 Prospect. Rafaela has a .344 wOBA and 118 wRC+ since the beginning of June.
Romy Gonzalez, Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies ($4,000) — With Rob Refsnyder out of the lineup on Sunday, Gonzalez moved into the leadoff spot. Leadoff at Coors Field is a must-play. Take the extra at-bat and make the stack. Austin Gomber’s 1.6 HR/9 is the highest on the slate. Gonzalez went 2-for-3 with a double on Sunday.
OUTFIELD
Stud
Tyler O’Neill, Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies ($5,700) — Another Boston bat? This one is a priority. They all are. It’s Coors. O’Neill has a .321 ISO, .433 wOBA and 179 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. Those are monster splits. He’s the best play on the slate — end of story.
Yordan Alvarez, Houston Astros at Oakland Athletics ($5,500) — Is it a Boston stack night or the Houston pivot? How about both? Pitching is affordable on Monday’s slate. Alvarez has a .227 ISO, .419 wOBA and 177 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. One last thing, Alvarez hit for the cycle on Sunday. Face it. It’s all about the Astros and Red Sox on Monday’s slate.
Value
Rob Refsnyder, Boston Red Sox at Colorado Rockies ($4,400) — The Red Sox hitter looks good on paper. Refsnyder has a .178 ISO, .397 wOBA and 154 wRC+ against left-handed pitching. The question is will he be on the paper? Refsnyder was not on the lineup card on Sunday (shoulder soreness).
Mauricio Dubon, Houston Astros at Oakland Athletics ($3,100) — This is similar to the Ceddanne Rafaela pick. Dubon has infield-outfield eligibility. He enables the wrap-around stack. The Astros get a ninth-inning at-bat. Dubon was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored on Sunday. He should draw a second start in a row with a lefty on the bump. Dubon has a .348 wOBA and 128 wRC+ against left-handed pitching.
