Colombia and Uruguay arrive at the Copa America 2024 semifinal Wednesday night in two very different ways but both will be looking to take the next step in this summer’s tournament with a win. The victor gets to take on defending champions Argentina in Sunday’s final. These two sides played in the quarterfinal round at the last Copa America, with Colombia winning on penalties after a 0-0 draw in regular time. The last meeting between the sides came in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, with that match ending in a 2-2 draw.

Colombia made quick work of Panama, scoring twice in the first 15 minutes en route to a 5-0 thumping. There was little resistance from Panama’s backline, and Colombia’s efficiency was on point with five goals on seven shots. Uruguay comes into this match off a completely different victory over Brazil, one that featured 41 total fouls. Neither side scored in regulation so the match went to penalties, where Uruguay won 4-2.
Jefferson Lerma comes back from suspension for Colombia, while defender Jhon Lucumi likely will remain out with a leg injury. Uruguay is going to be without two key players. Defender Ronald Araujo was injured against Brazil and has been ruled out for this match, while Nahitan Nandez is out thanks to a direct red card he got late in the quarterfinal.
These sides played to a 0-0 draw in the last Copa America and had a 2-2 draw in October 2023, so it makes sense to back a draw in regular time. However, I think Colombia has been as good as advertised and is on a roll after winning its group and trouncing Panama. Uruguay has played some tough games and used tremendous energy battling through Brazil. I’ll take Colombia to get the job done in regular time Wednesday.
