Oakland Athletics at Boston Red Sox
The Pick: Game total under 5.5 runs through first five innings -130
This entire game total feels inflated today with Luis Medina and Tanner Houck set to take the mound. I’m going to take the bullpens out of the mix and just focus on the starters through the first five innings. Sure, you could say that Tanner Houck has been regressing lately, allowing at least three runs in five straight starts. However, we have a very bad hitting lineup against the slider, which is what Houck is throwing more than 40% of the time. The A’s expected lineup for tonight has a combined .284 wOBA with a 28% K%.
On the other side of the ball, Medina has been fine on the hill. His numbers don’t blow you away but it essentially comes down to having three poor starts out of the seven he’s made. In the other four starts, he’s allowed no more than one run. Medina has really struggled against righties, where he has a .358 wOBA against. Lefties, however, is much better with a .279 wOBA. Luckily for him, the Red Sox lineup has a lot of lefties, likely starting six of them. Asking for six runs through the first five innings seems like a lot, so I’m going under.
Seattle Mariners at Los Angeles Angels
The Pick: Jack Kochanowicz under 4.5 strikeouts -110
Kochanowicz is an Angels prospect who’ll be making his MLB debut tonight. The Angels are calling him up straight from Double-A, where he’s pitched 91 inning and has a 4.55 ERA with a 3.67 FIP and a 7.8 K/9. Strikeouts haven’t been a big part of Kochanowicz’s game, as he never saw higher than a 8.2 K/9, which he earned back in Single-A. Coming up and making his debut, this doesn’t seem like an ideal spot to suddenly rack up five strikeouts, even against the free swinging Mariners. He induces a lot of contact and gets outs through groundballs, doing so at a 63% rate at Triple-A this season. With this in mind, I’ll be looking to go under his strikeout total tonight.
