Netherlands and England will face off in the Euro 2024 semifinal Wednesday, with the winner set to face Spain in the final. England is hoping to get back to the final after losing to Italy at the last European championship, while Netherlands attempts to reach the final for the first time since it won the entire tournament in 1988. These sides were in the same part of the knockout bracket in Euro 2021, but Netherlands lost to Czech Republic in the round of 16. These teams last faced off in a UEFA Nations League semifinal in 2019, with Netherlands winning that game 3-1 in extra time.

The Dutch did enough to advance from what many believed was the “Group of Death”, getting four points and progressing despite finishing third. England was unblemished with a win and two draws in the group but has generally looked uninspiring going forward. The team has five goals in five games, with the two against Slovakia coming well after 90 minutes had been played. Netherlands, on the flip side, has scored nine goals in five matches.
There are no injuries or suspensions on either side. Luke Shaw briefly took the pitch against Switzerland in the quarterfinal, so he should be good to go for this encounter.
Netherlands has largely been able to score at will, putting in at least two goals in each of its last three games. Cody Gakpo has been continuing his strong year, while Memphis Depay and Donyell Malen have emerged as great supporting attackers. England’s defenders will have to be extremely focused, with midfielders Declan Rice and Kieran Trippier likely dropping more to support the back three. As much as I believe in Netherlands, England seems to find a goal whenever it needs it the most. There’s some real “team of destiny” vibes, even though the aesthetics have been less than appealing. England should’ve lost to Slovakia, and got to penalties against Switzerland thanks to a Bukayo Saka wonder goal. At some point, you have to think that luck stops. However, that’s also the case for Netherlands to see its scoring streak stop.
I’ll take a draw in regular time, and I’ll take Netherlands to advance. England once again finds enough to push the match to the brink but comes up short in a crucial spot this time around.
