Euro 2024 quarterfinal action concludes late Saturday afternoon with Netherlands battling Turkey for the last spot in the semifinal round. The Dutch will be looking to reach the semifinal round for the first time since 2004, while Turkey is hoping to get back for the first time since 2008. Both teams had strong performances in the group stage but Turkey definitely had the tougher round of 16 encounter.

The Dutch are rolling into this match after a 3-0 win over Romania, easily the team’s best performance of this tournament so far. Cody Gakpo has been on fire with three goals in four matches, while Donyell Malen has emerged as well with two goals in the last contest. Turkey had the upper hand on Austria but nearly gave the result away in stoppage time. Goalkeeper Mert Gunok made an amazing save to deny Christoph Baumgartner, which would’ve sent the match to extra time. Turkey escaped with a 2-1 win.
There are no injuries or suspensions for Netherlands, although Malen might finally break into the starting lineup after his showing against Romania. Turkey will get Hakan Calhangolu and defender Samet Akaydin back after both served suspensions against Austria. However, Orkun Kokcu, Ismail Yuksek and Merih Demiral are all suspended after picking up cards in the round of 16. Demiral scored both of Turkey’s goals against Austria but won’t be able to build on that performance against Netherlands.
Turkey defeated Netherlands 4-2 at home in March 2021 during World Cup qualifiers, but the Dutch returned the favor in Amsterdam several months later to the tune of 6-1. It’s been an admirable run for Turkey but I think Netherlands is flying high on confidence right now. Give me the Dutch to win this one in regulation and advance to the semis.
