Surprisingly, Venezuela has emerged as a quarterfinalist from the group, meaning only one more spot is available. Mexico are coming into this contest off a 1-0 loss to the South American side, while Ecuador defeated Jamaica 3-1 to bounce back from a 2-1 loss to Venezuela.

Mexico has looked out of sorts in this tournament, largely due to the inexperience across the squad when it comes to international play. The play in the final third has been particularly poor, with El Tri scoring just one goal on 38 shots across two matches. That’s not good enough for a side of Mexico’s caliber, and it won’t be enough against an Ecuador team that has been a threat to score with four goals in two matches.
Edson Alvarez will not participate in this match or the rest of the competition due to a hamstring injury he suffered in the opener. That’s a huge loss for Mexico with the captain and midfielder serving as the anchor for the new-look squad. On the flip side, Ecuador should be getting star striker Enner Valencia back from a suspension due to his red card in the first contest.
Because Ecuador have the superior goal differential, a draw would be enough for it to go through. Mexico hasn’t been good enough in front of goal to take El Tri, but Ecuador looked a bit off against Venezuela and might’ve punched above its weight against Jamaica. I’ll take a draw here, which would eliminate Mexico from Copa America 2024.
