NBA Draft 2024 trade tracker: Analysis, grades for every transaction during draft

Updated:

By: Nick Simon

The 2024 NBA Draft will begin on Wednesday, June 26 with the first round and will conclude on Thursday, June 27 with the second round. It’s no secret that this is considered one of the weakest draft classes in recent memory and there’s not much drama outside of who the Atlanta Hawks will take with the No. 1 overall pick.

Instead, the intrigue this year comes from the trade front as the rumor mill have flared up in recent weeks. We’ve already seen the Brooklyn Nets send Mikal Bridges across the East River to the New York Knicks for a hefty package this week and there’s a possibility that more notable players could be on the move as well. Could the Phoenix Suns pull the plug on the Kevin Durant experiment? Could Los Angeles Clippers forward Paul George be on the move in a sign-and-trade? We’ll all find out shortly.

We’ll keep track of all of the NBA Draft trade activities below and offer a quick grade where necessary.

2024 NBA Draft trade tracker

Wednesday, June 26

Knicks-Wizards

New York and Washington have swapped picks. No. 24 Kyshawn George out of Miami will go to the Wizards while the Knicks will selected French wing Pacome Dadiet at No. 25. The Knicks also got No. 51 in the second round.

Suns-Nuggets

Phoenix selected Dayton guard DaRon Holmes II at No. 22, but will ship him to Denver for the No. 28 pick and other future selections.

Timberwolves-Spurs

The first trade during the draft involved the San Antonio Spurs using the No. 8 pick on Kentucky guard Rob Dillingham before immediately shipping him to the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Minnesota adds some depth with a young guard that can contribute in spurts off the bench. Meanwhile, some sixth grader is going to be calling San Antonio home in the future.

Wizards-Trail Blazers

We have our first trade on draft night with about an hour to go until the first round begins. The Washington Wizards are sending F Deni Avdija to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for PG Malcolm Brogdon, the 14th pick in tonight’s draft and a 2029 pick, per Woj.

Wizards grade: C+

Brogdon has one more year left on his contract before hitting free agency next summer. He only played in 39 games this past season for Portland. The Wizards get a starting point guard in Brogdon and he helps clear cap for next offseason. Meanwhile, they will get No. 14 pick Bub Carrington out of Pitt as part of the deal.

Blazers grade: B

The Blazers have a decent young core now with Avdija, Anfernee Simons, Shaedon Sharpe and Scoot Henderson. The Blazers get the 23-year-old Avdija, who has four years remaining on his contract. He did make a jump and finished 6th in voting for Most Improved Player this past season, posting career highs pretty much across the board. Portland is clearly banking on a change of scenery helping Avdija untap his potential.

Knicks-Nets

As mentioned before, the Brooklyn Nets shipped forward Mikal Bridges across town to the New York Knicks in exchange for a hefty package that included Bojan Bogdanovic and several unprotected first-round picks in the future.

Knicks grade: B+

New York gave up a ton of future assets to acquire Bridges from Brooklyn. But when you’re a team that was a few injuries away from making the Eastern Conference Finals, these are the types of moves you make to level up as a contender. The Knicks are acquiring a player in Bridges who will fit right into Tom Thibodeau’s lineup as a former First Team All-Defense player. And there’s an added locker room chemistry bonus by the fact that he will be joining former Villanova teammates Jalen Brunson, Josh Hart, and Donte DiVincenzo on the roster.

With this move and OG Anunoby set to re-sign, they should be a threat to Boston in the East next season….if they stay healthy of course.

Nets grade: A

The first step to rebuilding is to admit that your current configuration isn’t going to work and that’s what the Nets did with moving Bridges across town. The team is now flush with draft capital over the next several seasons and will be beneficiaries if the Knicks falter in at least one of them. They also get a productive veteran in Bogdanovic for whom they can take a flyer on for a year before he becomes a free agent next summer.

Nets-Rockets

As basically an addendum to the Bridges trade, Brooklyn completed another trade with Houston involving several future picks.

To put this in layman’s terms, the Nets acquired back the picks they sent to the Rockets as part of the James Harden trade. In turn, they essentially shipped out the picks they acquired from the Suns as part of the Kevin Durant trade to the Rockets. And the kicker here is that there’s speculation that the Rockets did this in hopes of shipping those picks back to the Suns in exchange for Durant. NBA trades can get complicated and weird really fast.
