In Baltimore, on Wednesday a pair of playoff-contending teams clash in a battle of rookie starting pitchers with the Atlanta Braves on the road to take on the Baltimore Orioles.

Spencer Schwellenbach gets his third career MLB start for the Braves after surrendering a total of nine runs across 9 2/4 innings with two home runs allowed in his first two starts.
Prior to his MLB call-up, Schwellenbach had made just two career pitching appearances above the A+ level and completely skipped the AAA ranks while Orioles starting pitcher Cade Povich had 21 starts at the AAA level the past two seasons in preparation for his call-up.
Povich makes his second career start on Wednesday after surrendering six runs, four walks, and a home run in 5 1/3 inning in his MLB debut against the Toronto Blue Jays last Friday after posting a 3.18 ERA for AAA Norfolk this season.
Supporting Povich is an Orioles lineup that entered Tuesday leading all MLB teams in scoring with nearly 5.2 runs per game and leading the league in home runs both overall and on a per at-bat basis.
The Braves’ offense is looking to recapture their 2023 form when they led all MLB teams in runs and home runs, entering the series ranked 12th in the league averaging over 4.4 runs per game. But, they’re averaging closer to 4.6 runs per game on the road. The team is also sixth in the league in home runs per game on the road with nearly 1.2 per game while ranking 23rd with 0.9 home runs per game at home.
Both teams entered the series in form that is neither great nor bad in the bullpen with the Braves 11th in bullpen ERA the past 30 days with a mark of a 3.30 ERA while the Orioles 3.35 ERA the past 30 days ranked 12th.
With the Orioles offense in great form and both starting pitchers having a combined three starts of experience, Wednesday’s game in Charm City will be a good luck charm for those who enjoy lots of runs.
