The Gilded Age season 4 episode 2 preview
Bertha spent the premiere in England, where Gladys survived a difficult childbirth and delivered a son. George remained in New York, still angry about the marriage Bertha arranged for their daughter. He planned to move out before she returned. Episode 2 brings Bertha home, and the synopsis promises a cold reception from the household.
Agnes van Rhijn has a different family problem. Oscar has married Enid Winterton, the wealthy widow who once worked for Bertha as Turner. Agnes is appalled by her new daughter-in-law’s background, but Enid has offered to help pay for the dinner Agnes wants to host for President Grover Cleveland. Accepting that money would be a considerable concession for Agnes. The next episode also finds her reluctantly agreeing to an interview.
Peggy is celebrating progress on her book while preparing to marry Dr. William Kirkland. His mother has already been dismissive of her writing, and the Episode 2 synopsis suggests more trouble in Newport, where Peggy’s ambitions clash with the social crowd. She has good reason to wonder how comfortably her career will fit into this marriage.
Marian and Larry, meanwhile, spent the night together after a storm stranded them at a hotel following Oscar and Enid’s wedding. By morning, Marian was frightened about what the encounter could mean for her reputation. They still haven’t repaired their engagement, and Larry’s attempts to reassure her haven’t settled the matter. Their reunion leaves plenty to discuss, especially when they seem to understand the consequences of that night so differently.
