Is Jordyn Tyson a must-start if he plays in Week 9 vs. the Browns?

After being selected No. 8 overall by the Saints in this past NFL Draft, Jordyn Tyson ($5,200) hurt his hamstring during training camp in August and he has been sidelined since. New Orleans has been patiently waiting for Tyson to get healthy and following the Saints’ bye in Week 8, the receiver finally looks ready to make his NFL debut.

Tyson is returning to practice Wednesday ahead of Sunday’s matchup vs. the Browns.

Barring any injury hiccups, Tyson should participate in practice for the rest of the week and he should play Sunday, but should fantasy managers be starting Tyson in his NFL debut?

Jordyn Tyson Week 9 Fantasy Outlook

There’s no denying Tyson is an elite prospect. In his final two seasons at Arizona State, the 6’2″ wideout caught 136 passes for 1,812 yards and 18 touchdowns in 21 games. Between these two seasons, Tyson saw a whopping 213 targets.

Tyson now joins a Saints offense that ranks second in pace and 11th in PROE this season. This is a fantasy-friendly offense and Chris Olave ($7,400) leads this unit with a 25.3% target share. However, this offense lacks receiving threats outside of Olave. Devaughn Vele ($5,100) and Juwan Johnson ($4,200) are the next best options, but both have been inconsistent and aren’t true playmakers.

The door is wide open for Tyson to be New Orleans’ No. 2 pass catcher and he should seize opportunity this season. But, will he hit the ground running this Sunday vs. the Browns?

Tyson unfortunately has been a fragile player. The hamstring injury he suffered in August kept him out for longer than anticipated and is the third hamstring injury Tyson has suffered over the last year. The Saints most likely are going to be cautious with the rookie in his first taste of NFL action and it’s hard to imagine Tyson sees a full complement of snaps this weekend.

Tyson likely will handle around a 50% route rate and this also isn’t a great matchup, as Cleveland is giving up the ninth-fewest yards per pass this season (6.5). Tyson definitely could salvage a decent fantasy performance of around 10 FPTS, but his floor is shaky and he by no means is a must-play. You more than likely have a better option to start over Tyson and taking the wait-and-see approach with the rookie is the right move this weekend.
