Sunday’s loaded NFL Week 8 slate features a massive showdown in the AFC West between the Kansas City Chiefs and Denver Broncos at Empower Field, with kickoff set for 4:25 p.m. ET.
The Chiefs (5-1) are coming off a blowout loss at the hands of the defending champion Seattle Seahawks, a game in which Kansas City’s offense appeared to be exposed a bit. On the other side, the Broncos (5-2) have won three straight games and are suddenly just one game back of the Chiefs for the top spot in the AFC West. Heading into this week, both teams are looking to pick up an important win and seize control of the division as we near the midway point of the season.
The Chiefs are 1.5-point road favorites with the game total set at 40.5 at DraftKings Sportsbook. Let’s dive into the top player prop bets for Sunday’s clash between the Chiefs and Broncos.
Chiefs vs. Broncos NFL Player Prop Bets
Patrick Mahomes over 0.5 interceptions (-118)
This is one of the lowest totals on the Sunday slate, and for good reason. After all, both of these defenses are very feisty and both units are very familiar with each other. The most notable takeaway from the first meeting between these teams back in Week 1 centered around a few glaring issues on the Broncos’ side of things, mainly that they simply couldn’t tackle. The Chiefs offense got the majority of their passing yards after the catch and Patrick Mahomes actually wasn’t that effective on a down to down basis throwing the ball. Instead, Kansas City leaned on its ground game and trusted that Denver would make mistakes — which it did.
Speaking of Mahomes, the best quarterback of his generation has not exactly played clean football through the first two months of the campaign. The Texas Tech product has thrown an interception in four of his six games played to this point, and that includes an interception against this Denver defense back in Week 1. Mahomes doesn’t usually turn in back-to-back poor showings, but given all of the Chiefs’ injury struggles, it’s not a shock that he seems to be pressing a bit and this has resulted in some turnovers. With the Broncos defense set to get Patrick Surtain II back this week, there likely won’t be any clean windows for Mahomes to throw into. With that in mind, we could see a second interception against the Broncos this season from the Kansas City quarterback.
Kenneth Walker under 88.5 rushing yards (-110)
Instead of focusing on a player prop bet from one of the few healthy options remaining on Denver’s struggling offense (ranked 22nd in EPA per play and 29th in success rate), I’m going to fade another key player on the Kansas City side of things. In this case, the bet is on Kenneth Walker III to go under bis rushing yards prop. The reigning Super Bowl MVP went off against Denver in his first game in a Chiefs uniform, to the rune of 173 yards on 23 carries. Much of that was due to the Broncos’ aforementioned lack of tackling, as Walker picked up a ton of yards after first contact in Week 1.
This time around, I’d expect that the Denver defensive coaching staff is fully aware of the Chiefs unfortunate injury situation at wide receiver, and they will likely look to stifle the Kansas City ground game in order to force Andy Reid’s hand. If the Chiefs are going to briefly become a one-dimensional offense on Sunday, it will be because Denver’s defense (ranked fourth in success rate and sixth in EPA per play) loaded the box and shut down Walker a Kansas City ground attack that has been the focal point of this offense through six games. I’ll take an under on Walker’s rushing yards at this number.
