Week 8 of the NFL season begins with a tilt between playoff hopefuls in the NFC. The Carolina Panthers are in Green Bay, Wisconsin, where they take on the Packers at Lambeau Field. This game carries a fairly high total and looks like a great night for offense, but we know Thursday games can be a little bit weird at times. What’s in store for this time around?

Here’s the best Christian Watson prop bet for Packers vs. Panthers on Thursday Night Football in Week 8.

Best Christian Watson prop bet for Packers vs. Panthers

The Packers just got star halfback Josh Jacobs back last week for his season debut, but they still turned to the pass above all else against the Lions. Jordan Love threw 45 attempts in that matchup, completing 27 of them for 274 yards and a pair of touchdowns. However, Christian Watson – one of his top wideouts in the midst of a breakout alongside Matthew Golden – recorded just five catches for 57 yards, marking his second straight week with fairly pedestrian production.

Looking at the first seven weeks of his campaign, Watson has been one of the best receivers in football. He has 595 receiving yards and six touchdowns on just 34 catches, seemingly elevating his game beyond what he’d shown across injury-plagued seasons in the past. Heading into Week 8, he leads Green Bay in receiving yards and touchdowns, ranking tied best in receptions and second in targets, too. Generating an average of 85.0 receiving yards per game, Watson is clearly in the midst of a career-best year.

The big question is whether he can shake off two weeks in which he’s been held to 64 receiving yards or fewer. At first glance, the opposing Panthers’ secondary may seem like a great matchup with star cornerback Jaycee Horn (quad) sidelined on IR, but there may be more to it than meets the eye.

On DraftKings Sportsbook, Watson’s player prop bet lines are set at O/U 4.5 receptions and 70.5 receiving yards with a longest reception of 26.5 yards. His odds of an anytime touchdown are set at +130, third shortest of any player in this matchup. As for the game lines, the Packers are a 3.5-point favorite with the total set at 47.5 combined points.

At a surface level, this does seem like it would be a contest conducive to passing production. Green Bay is airing the ball out more than most teams and Carolina is doing the same, and the total is set fairly high. As mentioned above, Jaycee Horn’s absence does leave the Panthers without their top defensive back who would likely match up plenty with Watson on the outside, too. However, there are two key stats to consider when it comes to betting Watson’s props.

First up, the Panthers rank 11th in passing success rate allowed since Week 4 – the first game Horn missed – at 43.8%, so they’re a little better than the league average when it comes to limiting opposing passing attacks on a down-to-down basis. The stat that’s even more important is that they actually sit second in explosive pass rate allowed over the same span at 4.3%. What that tells us is that they’re largely kept 20-yard gains or better to a minimum.

That latter statistic is the one that matters most against a player like Watson. He’s recorded at least one reception of 20+ yards in six of his seven games this season and has become known for hauling in deep balls from the arm of Love, who’s one of the best in the league at throwing downfield. Watson has also connected on at least one reception over 26.5 yards in five of those seven games, a testament to his own explosiveness. Even still, the explosive pass rate allowed by Carolina, even in Horn’s absence, is enough to make me feel wary about betting this over. As such, I’m looking the opposite direction and targeting under 26.5 yards for Watson’s longest reception on Thursday Night Football.

Best Bet: Christian Watson longest reception under 26.5 yards (-112)
